PhD student in Social Anthropology with a focus on biological diversity The Department of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University is seeking candidates for one PhD position in the research project BIOrdinary: Biodiversity Dilemmas in Ordinary Places. The project investigates biodiversity dilemmas with emphasis on species mobility, imperial histories and place marked by human activity. Five case studies in different places of the world constitute the backbone.
The PhD student is expected to formulate their own independent case study (preferably, but not necessarily, related to biodiversity dilemmas surrounding food production) within the BIOrdinary framework (www. su.se/english/research/research-projects/biordinary). The PhD student will be an active part of the BIOrdinary team, which currently consists of five researchers based at the department.
The application deadline is March 24, 2023. Short-listed candidates may be called to an interview. Final decisions will be made by early June and the starting date is August 28, 2023.
Qualification requirements In order to meet the general entry requirements , the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
In order to meet the specific entry requirements , the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Social Anthropology stipulates that applicants must have completed courses equivalent to at least 120 credits in Social Anthropology or a comparable subject, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle. At least 15 credits in the second cycle must constitute a thesis project.
The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.
Selection The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity:

Terms of employment Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.
The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. The starting salary is currently 28 000 SEK per month.
Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
