atthe Department of Organic Chemistry. Closing date: 15 February 2023.

The Department of Organic Chemistry has an extensive research program, covering many areas of experimental and theoretical organic chemistry. Method development involving catalysis, sustainable chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, carbohydrate chemistry and enzyme chemistry are central themes.

This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden's foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science.

Project description Novel fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass and re-assembly to novel composite materials

Supervision: Prof. Joseph Samec Co-supervisor: Prof. Aji Mathew.

A PhD position is offered in the group of Prof. J. Samec at Stockholm University. The candidate will work on fractionation of lignocellulosic materials using benign methodologies. The fractions will then be chemically modified add functions using greeen and sustainable organic chemistry. The fractions will then be re-assembled to generate novel bio-based composite materials. Recycling, using principles of cascading will be addressed already in the design stage of functionalization and verified experimentally. Environmental sustainability will be addressed by life cycle assessment.

The main tasks include: 1) Novel benign fractionation of lignocellulosic materials 2) Apply green and sustainable chemistry to add function to fractions and re-assembly of the fractions to generate materials that can be efficiently cascaded to other applications. The project builds up on the recent research in the Samec group. See the group website www. organ.su.se/jsm/ for more information about the group, projects, and links to publications.

All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School, an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi- disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry.

Qualification requirements In order to meet the general entry requirements , the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements , the applicant must have a MSc thesis (at least 30 ECT) or equivalent (thesis at advanced level) in the research area of Organic Chemistry.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the documented knowledge of the candidate in the relevant field of research (see research field above), written and oral proficiency in English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the candidate's written motivation for seeking the position.
