PhD student: Arctic sea ice from remote sensing
The Department of Earth Sciences has around 80 employees. We have Bachelor and Master's programmes in Earth Sciences and in Geography as well as third-cycle education. Our strongest research areas lie within climatology, ecosystem sciences, and applied geoscience. The research strategy for the department emphasizes on further development of Earth System Science.

Arctic polynyas, more than just holes in the ice
Even in the middle of winter, small areas called “polynyas” open routinely within the Arctic sea ice. These openings expose the relatively warm ocean to the frigid atmosphere, forming new ice and dense water, sending oxygen and carbon to the deep ocean, and contributing to nutrient transport.
For planning shipping routes, tourist cruises or scientific equipment deployments, knowing where and when polynyas will open several months to days in advance is a prerequisite. Yet to date, routine spaceborne remote sensing retrievals of sea ice are unable to provide such information, hence forecasting must rely on models that do not represent the dynamics of sea ice opening accurately.
This project, ‘MAPS', funded by the Swedish Space Agency aims to determine:
Your task will consist in applying, and when necessary, adapting, this group's algorithms developed for Southern Ocean polynyas to the smaller ones in the Arctic. You will work with already available sea ice concentration, thickness, and drift products. The modelling part will be done using the large eddy simulation model MIMICA; no prior experience with it is required. All in-situ data required for the project have already been collected.
PhD students are encouraged to add their own ideas to the project, so we welcome candidates also interested in ocean mixing, air-sea fluxes of gasses, or transport of nutrients.
You are expected to publish your findings in English-speaking high quality papers and attend relevant national and international conferences.
You are not expected to join ship-based expeditions to the Arctic, but should you be interested to, you will be able to.
This position is a collaboration between the two universities of Gothenburg: Gothenburg University and Chalmers University of Technology. Project partners include Kay Ohshima, Hokkaido University, Japan, whom you will visit if the covid-situation allows.Eligibility
Basic eligibility for doctoral studies is a person who has completed a degree at the advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at the advanced level, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.
You can apply if:
Merits: The successful candidate will be expected to teach in Swedish within two years of employment. As such, proficiency in one of the Scandinavian languages is desirable; so is past experience at sea, as well as some experience with handling datasets in a Linux environment and/or on remote servers.Assessment criteria
The selection of applicants who meet the basic and specific eligibility requirements will be based on the ability to assimilate the education at third-cycle level.Employment
