PhD Student (f/m/d) Performing and analyzing large scale parallel

simulations on short high-intensity laser pulse interaction with solids

Through cutting-edge research in the fields of ENERGY, HEALTH and MATTER, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) solves some of the pressing societal and industrial challenges of our time. Join our 1.500 employees from more than 70 nations at one of our six research sites!

The Institute of Radiation Physics conducts research for states of matter under extreme conditions and in very small dimensions.

The Department of Laser Particle Acceleration is looking for a PhD Student (f/m/d) Performing and analyzing large scale parallel simulations on short high-intensity laser pulse interaction with solids.

Your tasks:
  • Assist the understanding of experiments for laser ion acceleration from our HZDR laser systems DRACO and PENELOPE by performing and analyzing large scale parallel simulations
  • Work in our team on Computational Physics, simulating and understanding fundamental processes that occur during the interaction of high power lasers with solids or near critical density targets
  • Participate in our team's effort to develop new experimental ideas including tayloring the interaction process, probing the self-emission of the laser irradiated warm and hot dense matter, or performing probing experiments at HIBEF (EuropeanXFEL)
  • Your profile:
  • Master`s degree in Physics or similar
  • Experience in computer simulations, ideally previous experience on computer clusters
  • lnterest in the understanding of the physics of interactions of high power lasers with solids, ideally you have knowledge on plasma physics or radiative properties of warm to hot matter
  • Helpful, but not required is the knowledge of C++, python, or programming for accelerators
  • Our offer:
  • A vibrant research community in an open, diverse and international work environment

  • Scientific excellence and extensive professional networking opportunities // The space for personal responsibility, design and own ideas
