GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR ( F acility for A ntiproton and I on R esearch) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

For our Nuclear Spectroscopy department, we are looking as soon as possible for a

PhD student (all genders) in Experimental Nuclear Physics

in part-time (65 %).

In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy is a technique that allows studying exotic atomic nuclei through measurements of transition energies, cross sections, and transition rates. The ERC funded LISA project, "Lifetime measurements with Solid Active targets", is a novel approach to study collective excitations in atomic nuclei. Active targets enhance the sensitivity and resolution for in- beam gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments enabling lifetime measurements of exotic rare isotopes.

Your Tasks:

  • testing active target detectors
  • participate in experiments
  • data analysis and dissemination.
  • Your Qualification:

  • master (or equivalent) degree in physics
  • knowledge of the experimental and computational techniques used in experimental nuclear physics such as knowledge of particle detectors, electronics and data acquisition
  • programming knowledge in python and C++
  • experience with the ROOT and GEANT software packages
  • interest in nuclear physics with exotic beams
  • good written and oral English language skills.
  • The successful candidate will have a chance to pursue his/her PhD studies at the University of Heidelberg.

We offer an interesting and challenging position in an exceptional, international, scientific environment. There are two vacant positions that are initially offered for 3 years.

Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).

GSI supports the vocational development of women. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for the position.
