PhD Researcher (f/m/d, E 13 TV-L, 60%) Faculty of Humanities, Institute of Modern History

Application deadline: 31.05.2023

The department of modern history at University of Tübingen invites applications for a position as

doctoral researcher / PhD candidate (f/m/d)

to be employed from the earliest possible date. The position is available for three years , with a possible extension for another year. The salary will be established according to the German E13 TV-L scale for public sector employees (and equals 60 percent of a lecturer's salary).

The position includes teaching duties (one course per semester, at two hours per week), collaboration in the department's research activities and occasional administrative tasks. The successful candidate will pursue an original research project of their own design in modern European or global history (PhD project).

Conditions of employment:

The successful candidate holds an excellent master's degree (or an equivalent qualification) in history or a neighboring historical discipline, with a focus on modern history and a strong interest in global history. Engagement with research questions across historical periods and disciplinary boundaries is desirable, as is the ability to work in a team. Fluency in English is required. If the candidate has no knowledge of German, we expect they acquire the ability to participate in the department's meetings and events, with German as one working language, within the first two years. Further required language skills are dependent on the research project pursued. Courses can be taught in English and German.

The university seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and therefore urges qualified women academics to apply for these positions. Equally qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preference in the hiring process. The university is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. It therefore takes individual's situation into account and asks for relevant information.

Applications containing the usual documents (cover letter, curriculum vitae, copies of certificates / diplomas, and if applicable, lists of publications and of courses taught) and an outline of the research project (max. 1,500 words), including a workplan, should be submitted via e-mail (in one single PDF file) to Prof. Dr. Jan C. Jansen (jan.jansenspam [email protected] ) by May 31, 2023.

The employment will be carried out by the central administration of the University of Tübingen.
