PhD positions

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for two PhD positions at commencing from August 1st 2023. The positions are for a fixed-term period of four years.

The Department of Philosophy has about 70 full-time and part-time employees, including about 10 PhD and postdoctoral positions. The department offers teaching at the bachelor's level in philosophy and rhetoric, and at the master's and PhD level in philosophy. In addition, it is responsible for running all the University of Bergen's Examen philosophicum courses. The research at the department spans a wide area. Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian master's degree or an equivalent foreign degree in philosophy. It is a prerequisite that the master's degree has been awarded at the time of application. Applicants who document a foreign degree will be evaluated according to the regulations of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) and The Faculty of Humanities' PhD Programme plan.
  • The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have good collaboration skills.
  • The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English.
  • Competence in Norwegian is an advantage.
  • Applicants will be evaluated according to admission requirements in The Faculty of Humanities' PhD Program pt. 2.1.

    In assessing the applications, emphasis is placed on the quality of the project and the academic qualifications of the applicants. The proposed project must fit within one of the research groups at the department. Strategic considerations, motivation, and the applicant's personal eligibility will also be taken into account.

    About PhD positions and research training:

    About the PhD position

    The main purpose of the PhD position is to complete a PhD degree, which qualifies for a career in academia and for other forms of employment that requires high analytical skills. The duration of the PhD position is four years, of which 25 per cent of the time comprises obligatory duties associated with teaching, dissemination of results and administration. A substantial part of such potential duties will include teaching, supervision and to participate in assessment and examination at the Examen philosophicum and/or other introductory courses at the Faculty of Humanities. A more detailed plan for this part of the position will be developed in collaboration with the Department at the very beginning of the employment period.

    Candidates who have already held a PhD position at the University of Bergen are not eligible to apply for this position.

    The employment period may be reduced for candidates who have previously been employed in a recruitment position.

    The PhD position demands that the applicant has their regular workplace at the University of Bergen, Department of Philosophy, and comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times.

    About the research training

    The PhD candidates must participate in the Faculty of Humanities' educational programme. The programme consists of completing a training component of 30 ECTS, annual progress reporting and an approved midway evaluation.     It is a prerequisite that the applicant meets the requirements for admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Humanities.

  • A project proposal of up to five pages/12.000 characters,when bibliography is not included. The project proposal should describe the research project, including research background, main research questions, theory, method, etc..
  • Bibliography for the proposed project.
  • A progress plan for the project.
  • A brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  • CV.
  • Transcripts and diplomas showing completion of the bachelor's and master's degrees. This must contain information about the number of ECTS of the master's degree, or be followed by an official and personalized confirmation with this information issued by the awarding institution.
  • A short summary of the master's thesis or equivalent thesis (up to three pages).
  • Relevant certificates/references.
  • A list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list).
  • Publications in your name (up to three works).
  • The names and contact information for two referees. One of these must be the main advisor for the master's thesis or equivalent thesis.
  • Applications and attachments must be in Norwegian, another Scandinavian language or English. Documentation in other languages ​​must be accompanied by certified translations. The attachments can be in Word- or pdf-format and must be uploaded in Jobbnorge before the application deadline.
