Position as PhD Research Fellow in ethical hacking available at Institute for Informatics.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. Starting date as soon as possible.

The research fellowship is a full-time position with a fixed-term period of three (3) years. Candidates who can and want to contribute to teaching and supervision at the department may be offered an additional year of teaching- related compulsory duties in the early stages of the contract period. In this case, the appointment period will be extended to a total of four (4) years, where compulsory duties will be spread out over the full contract period, averaging 25% per year.

Job description

Cyber attacks against computer systems has became everyday event. In order to protect our assets computer systems have to be checked from offensive perspec- tive by mimicking real attackers. The continuous and quick changes in IT sys- tems always result in new threats, new vulnerabilities and new type of attacks. The focus of this position is the research on ethical hacking learning platforms. Ethical hackers carry out realistic attack simulations, but training the ethical hackers requires up-to-date training environments where the white hat attackers can learn different vulnerability exploitation methods, practice and update their knowledge about offensive technologies.

The ideal candidate has experience in ethical hacking, has knowledge and experi-ence in Capture the Flag games and has experience with ethical hacking learning platforms such as Hack The Box or Tryhackme. The candidate should also be able to create Capture the Flag style challenges alone and should have basic knowledge about container technologies such as Docker. The objective of this position is researching, analyzing and developing solutions for offensive security learning platforms. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong background in Computer Security or similar disciplines with experi-ence in penetration testing.

Mandatory qualifications:

Master's degree (120 credits equivalent of the Norwegian Master's degree program) in Cyber Security

Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system

Grade requirements:

The norm is as follows:

the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor's degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system

the average grade point for courses included in the Master's degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system

the Master's thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system

Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
