GANResilRob project funded by the BPI and involving 2 French SMEs, one German institute and one German SME, between Metz, Strasbourg and Karlsruhe. The position will require a certain availability for travelling frequently between these three cities.
This PhD project is a part of the GANResilRob project, a research action between France and Germany, aiming at developing a more resilient industry. This project involves 2 French SMEs and 1 research institute and 1 SME in Germany, in collaboration with the CNRS within which this position will be recruited.
Industrial robots are precise, fast, and powerful. While the French and German industries are highly automated with a high number of such robots, the actual pandemic crisis showed quite clearly a lack in another key area: flexibility. When the global supply chains broke, both France and Germany consequently suffered significant disruptions of their industrial production. Both countries were not able to compensate for missing parts and materials or quickly switch to new products with available parts and components. An additional critical aspect was a lack of on-site workers, who had to work in home-office environments due to pandemic regulations. Therefore, the Covid-19 pandemic directly led to an economic crisis, not only in Germany or France but also in the whole world. France and Germany have the potential to overcome this negative impact. The inherent flexibility of the rapidly increasing fleet of industrial robots could be utilized by applying the latest research in the area of applied AI in which both countries, France and Germany, are very strong. The official „Roadmap for research and Innovation Network on Artificial Intelligence, France and Germany“, which is the basis for this call, can create these new powerful AI and robotics partnerships. The goal of the GANResilRob approach is to foster a new applied research collaboration between France and Germany to create a flexible, resilient industry based on the combination of powerful AI technologies like Machine Learning, GAN, AI-based semantic interpretation, and intuitive task programming. These technologies have the potential to provide support to quickly manufacture new products or to reconfigure robotic production lines due to changed supply chains. AI-based assembly methods and technologies can increase the flexibility and efficiency of robotic shop floor applications by creating resilient robotic production cells. GANResilRob will redesign the current production systems as a future critical path towards digital production environments with digital product models (like CAD) and digital AI-based, automatic product assembly systems. This will be the first step to make our economy more resilient and enable production sites to keep on producing with human-robot teams or only robots cooperating on the shop floor. GANResilRob will not replace jobs by robots but create new, more flexible jobs taking advantage of human intellectual capabilities and robot performance to ensure that production skills and capacities can grow in Germany or France or even return to these countries.Web site for additional job details
