We have two open PhD positions at TU Delft in the exciting new area of quantum photonics with color centers for scalable quantum communication and computing.

Job description

Positions are available in the following areas:

  • Photonic integrated circuits for quantum information processing. The research will include design and characterization of photonic foundry chips and in-house nanofabrication, and will have a special focus on hybrid integration and on-chip control of color centers, development of cryogenic optical switching, and integration with single-photon detectors.
  • Silicon color centers for scalable quantum communication and computing. You will study new color centers in silicon and diamond, including their fabrication and integration into nanophotonic structures, their quantum control, and their characterization using free-space and waveguide-based cryogenic spectroscopy.
  • As a member of our lab, you will have access to a brand new laboratory with state-of-the-art cryogenic, optical, and electrical equipment, a fully equipped cleanroom for nanofabrication, and regular tape-outs in commercial photonic foundries. Moreover, you will collaborate with world-leading research groups (e.g. at TUDelft, MIT, IMEC, KTH, etc.) including exchange trips. You will report your results in high impact scientific journals and present your work at photonics and physics conferences around the world such as CLEO and the APS March meeting.

    Requirements
  • You have a master's degree in physics, electrical engineering, or a comparable discipline at the time of taking on the position. You have basic knowledge of optics and electromagnetics, electrical/optical measurements, and excellent python coding skills. While prior knowledge of integrated photonics, nanofabrication, quantum physics and quantum information theory, quantum emitters, MEMS, and cryogenics are a plus, they are not required.
  • You enjoy working in a team, are able to solve problems independently, and have a strong drive for science and technology. You bring excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis.     Conditions of employment

    Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

    Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2541 per month in the first year to € 3247 in the fourth year.     The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science.
