Are you a bioinformatician with strong bioinformatics skills? Do you have a passion for evolutionary biology? If you answer yes to both, a few PhD positions are available in the groups of Dr. Rie Shimizu-Inatsugi and of Prof. Dr. Kentaro Shimizu at the University of Zurich. Our team is a mixture of people with diverse backgrounds: ecology, physiology, genetics, bioinformatics etc. Our research covers a wide range of evolutionary biology and relevant interdisciplinary topics supported by cutting-edge techniques of the members in each area.

Your responsibilities

The topic is about the genetic and epigenetic evolution of polyploid and diploid plant species, deciphering the molecularmechanisms behind their important traits using high-throughput sequencing data. The duration of the project is between 3 to 4 years with the possibility for further extensions by agreement.

Your profile

Necessary skills: for PhD students, basic experience and/or the interest and motivation to learn the following is required:

  • R, particularly data wrangling and visualization (tidyverse)
  • RNA-seq, BS-seq or whole genome data analysis pipelines: a) Steps: quality check, trimming, alignment, etc., b) Tools: FastQC, Trimmomatic/Trim Galore, STAR, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills in English
