Intestinal Bacteria from the ESKAPE group to Antimicrobial Treatment”
A PhD position is available at the Research Laboratory of the Division of
Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology, based in the laboratories of
the Medical Research Centre of Kantonsspital St. Gallen, in St. Gallen,
Switzerland.
Starting date: April 1st, 2023
Duration: 3.5 years
Working place: St. Gallen
The Medical Research Centre at Kantonsspital St.Gallen, where the laboratory
of experimental infectious diseases is based, supports researchers at the
hospital with a wide range of services and technically advanced infrastructure
in order to translate the diverse research ideas intoproductive research
projects with specialized knowledge and practical support in performing

Your Tasks and Perspectives
Identifying antibiotic resistance patterns of ESKAPE pathogens and
determining their mode of resistance mechanisms
Performing molecular experiments on resistant Gram-negative pathogens
Genome-editing (cloning and Crispr/Cas9)
Interdisciplinary collaborations and active contribution in shaping the
project
Willingness to draft own projects, on which you will work independently
Preparing findings for presentation at local and international conferences
and publication in peer-reviewed journals
Your Requirements
Master's degree in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or
related fields
Basic experience of designing and running experiments with microbial
cultures in the laboratory and hands-on experience with key biochemical
and molecular biological methods
Highly motivated person that is both eager to work independently and to
actively contribute to an interactive and supportive team and therein to a
positive lab environment
A strong background and interest in microbiology and preferably in
antimicrobial resistance of Gram-negative pathogens
active contribution in shaping the project
willingness to draft own projects, on which you will work independently
Creativity and self-directed problem solving are key to success in this
position as well as excellent teamwork and communication skills in English
