You will address the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) due to fast switching power electronics that impacts the reliable operation of battery packs in maritime applications. The high frequency currents and voltages caused by the hard switching power electronics induce voltages and currents at locations where that may be damaging, including the improper functioning of the Battery Management System (BMS). Also, high frequency stress (RF noise, current ripples, differential mode currents etc.) on maritime battery packs has an impact not just on its performance but also on its state-of-health (SOH) and results in faster degradation. Understanding, modelling and proposing mitigation of the EMC phenomena in maritime application is the first goal of this PhD position. In addition, early fault detection and mitigation is an important feature for protection of maritime battery packs. Reconfigurable battery systems for maritime applications improve safety by removing aged and/or faulty cells/modules from the pack. Developing an advanced power-electronics-based maritime BMS that further improves safety is the next goal of this project.

The ‘Maritime Batteries' project is financed by the Zero-emission and Circular Shipping call of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) in the domain of power electronics within the PE (Power Electronics and EMC) group. You will carry out the research at the University in Enschede, The Netherlands, closely with the support of several experienced supervisors (Dr. Prasanth Venugopal, Prof. Thiago Batista Soeiro and Prof. Frank Leferink) who will offer you routine supervision. Collaboration is an important aspect of the PhD position with project partners such as TU Delft, Leiden University, Radboud University and NHL Stenden University of Applied Science. In addition, you will work with a wide span of stakeholders such as NLDA (Nederlandse Defensie Academie), MARIN, TNO, Praxis Automation, EST-Floattech, ELEO Technologies, RHMarine, Wärtsilä, Huisman Equipment, Damen, Royal van Lent Feadship, DMO (Defensie Materieel Organisatie), Van Dam Shipping, Battery Competence Centre (BCC), KNVR (Koninklijke Vereniging van Nederlandse Redersand) and DNV, Norway. Teaching activities will take 10%-20% of your time.

Your profile
  • You are highly motivated and an enthusiastic researcher;
  • You have, or are about to get, a master's degree in power electronics, telecommunication engineering and/or electrical engineering;
  • Prior knowledge and experience with simulation tools (MATLAB, SPICE) and power electronics/EMC R&D (designing, debugging, testing ) etc. is an advantage;
  • You are an excellent teammate in an enthusiastic and hardworking group of scientists and engineers working within the PE group;
  • You are creative, like to push boundaries, and are highly motivated to address major science challenges in EMC, power electronics and energy transition;
  • You are driven by not only scientific excellence but also the societal impact of technology;
  • You are proficient in English and able to collaborate intensively with industrial and academic parties in regular meetings and work visits.
