PhD position @Institute of Physics in Zagreb

Research assistant/PhD position (f/m, 1 position) at the Institute of Physics (Zagreb, Croatia) for a period of five years. The supervisor of the assistant (mentor) will be Dr. Iva Šrut Rakić ([email protected]). The research topic will be focused on the study of the influence of strain on the morphology and electronic structure of 2D materials. The candidate will work on the synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenides and heterostructures of 2D materials using the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. Stepped metallic substrates will be used for growth to introduce strain into the system. Materials synthesized in this way will be characterized primarily by the techniques of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Spectroscopy (STS) in UHV, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and Near Field Effect Microscope (nano-FTIR) as well as other techniques available in the Surfaces, interfaces and 2D materials group (SEM, Raman, PL, 2D material transfer technique, etc.).

Previous experience in experimental work with nano-materials, material synthesis, microscopic techniques and/or surface modification is desirable. High motivation to work on the described topic and excellent knowledge of the English language are also expected. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in research work (recognitions, awards, scholarships, published papers, presentations at conferences, etc.) and who have practical experience in one of the aforementioned experimental techniques and methods. Mandatory requirements: completed undergraduate and graduate university studies in physics or equivalent and fulfilled requirements for enrollment in the appropriate doctoral study program in physics.

The application should include: evidence of fulfillment of mandatory requirements, certificate of Master's degree in physics, a letter of motivation with a brief description of scientific interests and plans, a CV indicating the candidate's strengths and experience, and the contact information of at least one mentor or scientist from whom a recommendation can be requested.
