Offer Description

Fully funded four-year Ph.D. position starts October 1, 2023 available in Faculty of Physics and Applied Computer Science, AGH , Poland . The proposed PhD project deals with theoretical description of nanostructures (quantum dots, QPC etc.) embedded in a two dimensional electron gas at transition metal oxide heterostructures, i.e.; LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO). 2D-oxides are characterized by a unique combination of tunable spin-orbit coupling (SOC), high-mobility, superconductivity (SC), interfacial 2D magnetism, and ferroelectricity. For this reason, in the last few years 2D-oxides are noticeable as a potential platform of spin-orbitronics where the spin-degrees of freedom are manipulated with electric fields through the spin- momentum locking of the electrons. In the framework of this project, we intend to deal with the spin-orbitronic quantum control methods for solid-state qubits in single and double quantum dots based on 2D electron gases (2DEGs) formed at oxide interfaces. Due to their large spin-orbit splitting (up to 0.5 eV in KTaO3 based 2DEGs), oxide interfaces are characterized by an exceptional degree of spin-momentum locking, and at the same time a unique combination of high-mobility, 2D-magnetism and superconductivity. The appearance of superconducting state controlled by the gate voltage is one of the most promising feature of these materials, important in the context of topologically protected qubits. Importantly, the combinations of SC and SOC, as we know, could lead to topological superconductivity with Majorana zero modes localized at the ends of the nanostructure. These exotic quasiparticles, which are their own antiparticles, are nowadays intensively explored in the context of quantum computing. The proposed topic contains new physics to be explored by the PhD student which guarantees interesting results publishable in the best scientific journals of physics.

The research will be carried out in the theory group of WFiIS AGH. Both existing numerical software and self-prepared codes are going to be used. Direct access to the high performance computing cluster is going to be provided as well as personal desktop and laptop.

The PhD student is going to become a part of a research team within the project financed from Horizon Europe 2022. Scholarship is about 1100 euro per month. Planned period of PhD project is 4 years.
