A PhD position is available in pediatric tumor nanoparticle targeting in the research group of Prof. Rössler and PD Dr. Bernasconi at the Department of Pediatric Hematology & Oncology of the INSELSPITAL, University Hospital Bern, Switzerland.
PhD in pediatric tumor targeting with nanoparticles
Many who survive childhood cancer experience treatment complications as adults. One of the biggest challenges of treating children with cancer is achieving complete remission, while ensuring that they will be able to lead normal, productive life in adulthood. In particular we focus on rhabdomyosarcoma, the most frequent the pediatric soft tissue sarcoma. Our aim is to improve existing therapies by delivering drugs specifically to the tumor or its vasculature, thereby reducing late effects and increasing the efficacy of the treatments. We have identified specific rhabdomyosarcoma binding peptides. Recently, we have been establishing the optimal conditions to formulate two types of nanoparticles: liposome and silica-nanotubes loaded with chemotherapeutics and decorated with targeting moieties.
One aim of the project is to assess in vivo targeting of nanoparticles to RMS tumors and quantify the biodistribution and therapeutic potential by quantitative and qualitative approaches. A further aim of the project is to investigate the mechanisms of cellular uptake of the targeted nanoparticles, focusing in particular on the biological and mechanistic role of the targeted cell surface molecules.
Your profile
We expect enthusiastic candidates, with strong commitment to drug delivery and cancer research. Experience in formulation of liposomes, analytical techniques such as HPLC, cellular and molecular biology is beneficial. Experience with animal work is not mandatory, but willingness to learn is.
The package
The applicant will be enrolled in the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (GCB) at the University of Bern. As part of the Department of Biomedical Research (DBMR), we offer a stimulating work environment, with journal clubs, regular seminars and lectures; access to research facilities with all the standard equipment for cell and molecular biology, FACS sorting, confocal imaging, real-time imaging, and animal experimentation. The candidate is expected to present the progresses at international conferences.
