PhD position in Geochemistry and Paleoclimatology (f/m/d)

The Sedimentology and Marine Paleoenvironmental Dynamics Group within the Institute of Earth Sciences, Heidelberg University, Germany, invites applications for a

PhD position in Geochemistry and Paleoclimatology (f/m/d)

The position is to be filled latest by August 31st, 2023.

Project description:

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), with the Gulf Stream system as its best known component, is a major component of the planet′s climate system. In order to make realistic predictions about future developments, it is necessary to understand and quantify the dynamics of ocean circulation.

During the Holocene ocean circulation is dominated by a pronounced production of North Atlantic deep water with North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), filling large parts of the Atlantic Basin. For the last glacial cycle (the past ~120,000 years) different circulation modes have been proposed for different time periods.

However, there are critical objections to the extent to which former studies reliably reconstructed the AMOC state of the past. This DFG-funded project aims for determining the AMOC from different radiogenic circulation proxies on deep marine sediments, which will provide essential parameters for climate models.

Requirements:

  • MSc or equivalent degree in Earth or environmental sciences or a related field such as physics or chemistry
  • Strong interest in geochemical and climatological topics
  • Experience of working in chemical laboratories
  • Very good written and spoken English and the ability of presenting scientific results in lectures and publications
  • Desirable, but not necessary, are experiences with analytical methods in isotope geochemistry (mass spectrometry), wet chemistry and data analysis and publications
  • We offer:

  • A vibrant and lively working environment in an excellent research institute
  • A position to be filled for a period of 3 years
  • The remuneration is up to pay group E13 TV-L (66-75%), if the relevant requirements are met.

We look forward to receive you application until March 31st, 2023.

Please send your meaningful and complete application documents (curriculum vitae, letter of motivation, contact information of three referees familiar with the applicant's research, list of publications) by e-mail in a pdf document to: [email protected] For information on the advertised position and the research project, please contact Dr. Jörg Lippold ([email protected]; +49 (0)6221 54-5983).
