The Sedimentology and Marine Paleoenvironmental Dynamics Group within the Institute of Earth Sciences, Heidelberg University, Germany, invites applications for a
PhD position in Geochemistry and Paleoclimatology (f/m/d)
The position is to be filled latest by August 31st, 2023.
Project description:
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), with the Gulf Stream system as its best known component, is a major component of the planet′s climate system. In order to make realistic predictions about future developments, it is necessary to understand and quantify the dynamics of ocean circulation.
During the Holocene ocean circulation is dominated by a pronounced production of North Atlantic deep water with North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), filling large parts of the Atlantic Basin. For the last glacial cycle (the past ~120,000 years) different circulation modes have been proposed for different time periods.
However, there are critical objections to the extent to which former studies reliably reconstructed the AMOC state of the past. This DFG-funded project aims for determining the AMOC from different radiogenic circulation proxies on deep marine sediments, which will provide essential parameters for climate models.
