The Department of Biomechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering Technology (ET) at the human-tech oriented University of Twente is seeking a hardworking PhD candidate to join us for a full-time, fully funded, 4-year project on the development of an open-access medical image and automated processing platform to extract morphologic data for orthopedic applications. You will be supervised by the energetic and high-reaching Biomedical Device Design & Production team.

The Challenge

Knowledge about the individual morphology plays a key-role in the new generation of personalized product design and treatments. Morphology can be used to answer research questions, such as gender, age and ethnic differences within the population or to search for a digital twin that aids anatomic reconstruction, and direct design applications of implants, prostheses and orthoses. Despite the need, such data are rarely available. The reasons are manifold: the access to large numbers of medical image data is limited, implementation of image processing strategies is challenging, data are collected only for isolated questions or applications, and legal uncertainties play a role with respect to privacy and conflicting economic interests.


The PhD's objective is to develop the contours and pilot work of an open- access platform for the upload, storage and (semi)automated processing of medical image data to provide a large number of morphological data to various research communities. Thereto, an overview is made of running initiatives; and pros and cons are evaluated. Optionally, we will team up with them. The PhD develops segmentation methods applicable to different structures assisted by input from trained healthcare professionals. We demonstrate the benefit and potential of such a database by selected use cases in the orthopaedic domain, e.g. joint replacement. Our ambition is to evolve the candidate's work into an open-access and sustainable database, which can be operated and used in the long term to provide and enable for future research.

Your profile
  • You hold a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Informatics, Vision Robotics, Computer science, Software Engineering or equivalent.
  • You have knowledge and skills in image processing, shape analysis, and web applications.
  • You have experience in software architecture, programming and medical applications.
  • You have high-level analytical, organizational and managerial skills.
  • You are motivated to establish a sustainable open-access character of the database by generating awareness using your good interpersonal skills.
  • You are fluent in English, both spoken and written. (We require a TOEFL > 90 or IELTS > 6.5 score). The latter is not necessary for native speakers of English or whose MSc program was in English.
  • You are able to start the position no later than 1 Feb 2023.
