The Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural and Religious Studies invites applications for a PhD position in coastal archaeology, commencing August 1st, 2023, or as agreed. This position is for a fixed-term period of four years.

The successful applicant will join the discipline of Archaeology and the Humans and Materiality research group at the Department. We have a research environment with a long-standing interest in human–sea interactions and coastal life (exemplified for instance in our ongoing field project “11,000 years on Hjartøy: Stone Age settlements – seasonal structures – fisher-farmers and the age of oil”, run in tight collaboration with Section for Cultural Heritage at the University Museum). Among the themes we explore are changing preferences in landscape use across the Stone Age; new foci in marine landscape exploitation with the establishment of farming; seasonal uses of islands for maritime hunting and fishing linked to the development of hierarchical political structures in the Iron Age (and their expansion into the North Atlantic); the collapse of this kind of socio-economic system with the rise of medieval urban centres; early modern globalization; 20th century industrial installations; and the challenges of recent climate change and pollution.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

The applicant must hold a Norwegian master's degree or the equivalent foreign degree in Archaeology. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded at the time of application. Applicants who document a foreign degree will be evaluated according to the regulations of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) and The Faculty of Humanities' PhD Programme plan.

The applicant must be able to work independently in a well-structured way and have good cooperation skills.

The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Applicants must submit a proposal for a research project that will result in a doctoral dissertation.

Applicants will be evaluated according to admission requirements in The Faculty of Humanities' PhD Program pt. 2.1.

In assessing the applications, the academic quality and feasibility of the proposed PhD project and the academic qualifications of the candidate will be considered. Further emphasis is also placed on strategic considerations, motivation, and the applicant's personal eligibility.

About the PhD position:

The main purpose of the PhD position is to complete a doctoral degree, which qualifies for for a career in academia and for other forms of employment that require high analytical skills. The duration of the PhD position is four years, of which 25 per cent of the time comprises obligatory duties associated with teaching, dissemination of results, and administration. The plan for this part of the position is developed in collaboration with the Department at the very beginning of the employment period.

The successful applicant's research project will address a theme connected to maritime and coastal life, including the importance of the outer coast and its islands, whose social and economic significance remains under-researched.

The aim is to contextualise the rich archaeological record of western Norway in a comparative inter-regional perspective, highlighting its potential for contributing to research in coastal archaeology more generally. This is to be achieved by focusing on a significant instance of change (for example in material culture traditions, human-environment interaction, or another suitable topic). One or more of the following archaeological periods can be covered: Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Medieval period, Early Modern and contemporary periods.

We invite projects focusing on either:

Material culture and technology (e.g. development of fishing gear or ship-building; tracing of artefact-based contact networks along the coast and between the coast and inland).

Architecture (e.g. long-term trends in the design and siting of seasonal structures, of ship- and boat-related installations or of features related to marine resource processing).

Landscape (e.g. changing patterns in site location; links between settlement patterns and marine productivity; marine resource management; human impact on the environment, human adaptations to environmental change; human-animal interactions).

Applicants who have already held a PhD position at the University of Bergen are not eligible for employment.

The employment period may be reduced for candidates who have previously been employed in a recruitment position at other institutions.

The PhD position demands that the applicant has their regular workplace at the University of Bergen, Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural and Religious Studies and comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times.

About the research training:

As a PhD candidate you must participate in the Faculty of Humanities' educational programme.
