Cardiac pathologies are often characterized by a change of myocardial stiffness. For example, some types of heart failure display changes in ventricular stiffness. Stiffness is an intrinsic property of soft tissues that reflects the pathological states. However, current clinical imaging tools such as echocardiography or MRI cannot assess it.
Recent advances in the field of ultrafast ultrasound imaging have allowed for the first time the quantitative assessment of myocardial stiffness in human patients. This approach is based on Shear Wave Elastography which relies on tracking at very high frame rate the velocity of shear-waves propagating in the myocardium.
The objective of this Phd is to develop a mathematical and numerical modeling of 3D Shear-Wave propagation in cardiac realistic physiological models in a small region of interest (ROI). Note that the modeling of the heart is our main focus but is also the most difficult living tissue to consider due to its active and fibered behavior. Propagation in other tissues (liver, muscles) is simpler both from the mathematical and numerical points of view.
In particular, the candidate will participate in the development of a simulation tool that will enable to validate the classical assumptions that (1) the heart can be considered in a quasi-static state, and (2) the propagation of waves can be considered as local but at a very high frequency. This requires the development of different strategies that rely on numerical and mathematical developments.
A strong background in applied mathematics is required. Knowledge in programming (C++) is an asset.Main activities
