Organizational unitLaboratory for Applications of Synchrotron Radiation (LAS)
Job descriptionThe activities of our group are focused on epitaxial growth and characterization of functional nanostructures and investigation of the lattice dynamics and associated phenomena (electron-phonon, spin-phonon interactions) with advanced x-ray scattering and spectroscopic methods using synchrotron radiation (more details can be found here: https: // www. nanodynamics-group.com/publications.html). In the frame of a BMBF-funded project, the interplay between lattice dynamics, crystal structure, epitaxial strain, core diameter and shell thickness of carefully selected core-shell nanowire heterostructures will be systematically investigated. Owning to their high aspect ratio and spatial confinement, core- shell nanowires attracted significant interest due to the possibility for engineering their physical properties by tuning the core diameter, shell thickness and epitaxial strain at the core-shell interface. The knowledge on phononic and thermal properties of these systems might have a revolutionary impact on important areas such as thermal management of micro- and nanoelectronics and thermoelectrics.
The epitaxial growth and structure characterization of the core-shell nanowires will be performed in the UHV-Analysis laboratory at the KIT-Light Source employing surface-sensitive methods available in the lab and at the synchrotron beamlines. The lattice dynamics will be investigated at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble and at the light source PETRA III in Hamburg employing state-of-the-art x-ray scattering and spectroscopy methods.
