The "DTAI @ Campus De Nayer" group performs research on industrial applications of Artificial Intelligence technology. It consists of about 10 researchers and is part of the larger DTAI group (https: // dtai.cs.kuleuven.be, mainly located in Leuven) and the EAVISE group (https:// www. eavise.be, a multidisciplinary research group located entirely on Campus De Nayer). KU Leuven Campus De Nayer is located in Sint-Katelijne- Waver, a few kilometers to the north of the city of Mechelen. Campus De Nayer is easily reachable by train (there is a station at 200m, with trains every half hour to both Antwerp and Mechelen/Brussels) and car (the E19 highway is 10 minutes away). In addition, the campus is also easily reachable by bicycle, since the "bicycle highway" from Mechelen to Antwerp runs by the campus: cycling from Mechelen takes about 20 minutes.
In this PhD, you research innovative ways of intelligently supporting machine operators in the manufacturing industry. For this, you will develop a knowledge-based AI system, which applies different forms of logical reasoning to the domain knowledge of experts. This research builds on results from previous projects within the research group, such as, for example, a prototype that helps engineers design machine parts (see: https: // lirias.kuleuven.be/retrieve/523033).
In this project, we will use similar technology to help operators adjust machines. As a PhD student in this project, you will:
collaborate with users and researchers from other disciplines to build a logical model of their expert knowledge;
research inference algorithms to make efficient use of this expert knowledge;
investigate new ways to represent and update this expert knowledge;
deliver working prototypes that put these results into practice.
The end result will be a reliable AI system that can interact naturally with operators and provide them with deeper insight into the machine's settings.
If you like clear and logical reasoning, building software that works, and innovative AI technology, this project offers you an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in these topics.Profile
We offer a position as PhD researcher within one of Europe's leading research universities. You will work on Campus De Nayer of KU Leuven, a campus of about 800 students and 100 teaching staff / researchers, located near the city of Mechelen. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with an enthusiastic team of AI researchers, and to benefit from our network of industrial contacts.
The offer is initially for a one year period, but this will be extended subject to a positive evaluation. You will be expected to finish your PhD in 4 years.Interested?
