  • Subjects Health Data Sciences Description The PhD Program in Health Data Sciences at the Charité is aimed at qualified young scientists interested in: - deepening their methodological knowledge in the fields of biostatistics, epidemiology, meta-research, population health science, public health, and/or medical informatics. - further expanding their competence in research and teaching

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded the academic degree of "Doctor of Philosophy" (PhD).

The goal of the multidisciplinary doctoral program in Health Data Sciences for outstanding junior researchers is to provide a structured framework of studies, research, and teaching for promising scientists in the disciplines of Health Data Sciences (HDS). The program places particular emphasis on preparing students for future careers at universities, non-university research institutions, and other scientific public or private institutions in the fields of biostatistics, epidemiology, meta-research, population health science, public health, and medical informatics.

The scientific coursework serves to deepen methodological knowledge, instill the fundamentals of sound scientific research practice, and promote effective dissemination of knowledge through teaching. Focus areas:

Methodology: Doctoral students attend courses in HDS domains to learn advanced health data sciences methods they will later apply in a practical research setting for their individual research projects.

Research: Interactive seminars and workshops serve to support doctoral candidates in all stages of their individual research project work ultimately resulting in three scientific publications.

Teaching: Under the guidance of experienced HDS faculty members, doctoral students prepare and teach courses focused on relevant topics.

The annual application window is 1st of February through 15th of March. Up to ten students may be admitted per year.

The structured PhD program is not coupled with a funding source. Students must apply for doctoral student positions ("Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter/in") or scholarships/stipends to finance their time as a student.

International prospective Health Data Sciences PhD students have the opportunity to apply for two three-year scholarships offered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP). More information about the eligibility criteria and the application process of the DAAD GSSP scholarships is available on the program website.

You can find detailed information regarding the program vision, structure, as well as the application process and the additional required documents on our website.

The HDS PhD program offers an interactive information session usually in October or November of each year for interested applicants to provide detailed information about the program structure and the admission process. Please contact us via email if you are interested in receiving more information about the HDS PhD information session.
