The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, and mathematical statistics. Our teaching is conducted at all levels and includes mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics announces a position as a doctoral student in computational science with specialization in mathematical statistics and focus on machine learning with medical applications. The position involves four years of doctoral studies, including participation in research and postgraduate courses. The last day to apply is September 30, 2022.
Project description and tasks Better planning of surgeries and subsequent postoperative care can make healthcare more efficient. A planning tool assumes that the patient's length of stay can be predicted using available data, including pre-surgical data, surgical data, postoperative data, and various registry data types.
As a PhD student, you will work within an interdisciplinary research group. The goal is to develop machine learning techniques that can be used to estimate the patient's length of stay and identify risk factors that contribute to extended stays. Knowledge of risk factors is expected to contribute to an increased understanding of how healthcare can be more efficient.
The project also aims to develop a systematic approach for using large and complex data and machine learning to improve care processes.

Qualifications The doctoral student will be admitted for studies at third-cycle level in Computational Science and Engineering with a specialisation in Mathematical Statistics.
To be admitted for studies at the third-cycle level, the applicant is required to have completed a second-cycle level degree or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second- cycle level, or have an equivalent education from overseas, or equivalent qualifications. To fulfil the specific entry requirements to be admitted for studies at third-cycle level in computational science and engineering, the applicant is required to have completed at least 90 ECTS credits in computational science and engineering courses, of which at least 30 ECTS credits shall have been acquired at second-cycle level. Computational science and engineering courses refer to courses with major quantitative, statistical, or computing science elements, such as courses in computing science, mathematics and mathematical statistics. Applicants who in some other system either within Sweden or abroad have acquired largely equivalent skills are also eligible.
We are looking for a driven person with a great interest in the research area, both in theory development and the interdisciplinary applications. Good knowledge of statistics or mathematical statistics, programming and English is a requirement. You are expected to collaborate with researchers from non- mathematical disciplines and clinicians in healthcare. Experience in interdisciplinary collaborations and knowledge of Swedish is therefore meritorious.
Applicants with a degree from a foreign university are encouraged to provide results from the GMAT (or GRE) and TOEFL/IELTS tests if available.
Assessments of the eligible applicants are based on their qualifications and ability to benefit from the doctoral education.
About the employment The position is intended to result in a doctoral degree. The main task of the doctoral student is to pursue their doctoral studies, including active participation in research and doctoral courses. The duties may include teaching or other departmental work (up to 20%). The employment is limited to the equivalent of four years of full-time (48 months) or up to five years when teaching part-time. Salary is set by the established salary ladder for PhD positions at Umeå University. The employment starts in November 2022 or according to an agreement.
