Description of the workplace The Cognitive Disease Research Group is a multidisciplinary group consisting of preclinical and clinical researchers whose goal is to define and understand the biological processes implicated in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases affecting cognition. We work translationally, where studies on samples from patients and animal models as well as cell culture experiments are included. Our long-term goal is to contribute to the development of new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases where effective treatments are still lacking. We are now looking for a PhD student for our project "Exploring the role for TDP-43 in retina and brain vessel pathology linked to Alzheimer's disease". The PhD student will conduct research at the Wallenberg Lab in Malmö under the direction of Malin Wennström. The scope of the position is full-time with entry in January 2022 or as agreed.

Work duties The PhD student's main task is to carry out her/his research studies, which includes participation in research projects and compulsory courses. The tasks will include analysis of human tissue, cerebrospinal fluid and plasma samples, proteomic data and cell culture studies. Other tasks within the research group may also be relevant.

Qualifications

Requirements for the position are:

  • Master's degree in neurobiology or in another relevant subject
  • Experience with protein assays and immunostainings
  • Experience working with cell cultures
  • Very good knowledge of spoken and written English
  • Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities. The job requires you to be communicative, accurate, curious, and committed to the subject. We would like to see that you have an interest in writing.

    Meritorious for the position are:

  • Knowledge of dementia diseases, especially Alzheimer's disease
  • Knowledge of the retina and the brain structure
  • Knowledge in Bioinformatics
  • Eligibility Basic eligibility for education at postgraduate level is for those who have completed a degree at advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

    Basis for assessment Regulations for employment as a doctoral student can be found in regulation SFS 1998:80. Only those who have been admitted to education at research level may be appointed as holders. When appointing, attention must be paid primarily to the degree of the ability to assimilate the postgraduate education. In addition to the obligation to engage in their own postgraduate education, the holder may be required to perform duties related to education, research and administrative work according to special provisions in the regulation.

    Terms of employment The employment is limited to four years according to HF chapter 5 § 7 and is full-time. Start date is 2024-01-01 or as agreed.
