We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate position at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Train position on railway track was of less interest in the old days because having a rough estimation of the train position was already enough for normal operation. With the latest development of ERTMS, autonomous train operation, as well as track condition monitoring with measurement cars, position of the train on the track is of great interest and of course the higher the accuracy, the better it is.

This position is about development of both hardware and software by using multi-sensor data for fail-safe highly accurate train positioning technology, specifically for track condition data measurement on measurement train. The data measured from track on train are often deviate from their absolute position. The aims of this position are:

1. to develop hardware, by mean of utilizing different commercially available positioning technologies to improve the accuracy of the spatial location of the data and,

2. to develop algorithm in pre- and post-process regimes to accurately align the data to its absolute location,

3. to identify train location in real-time when the train is travelling on the track.

This position is a part of Europe's Rail flagship area 6, FutuRe project.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Your immediate leader is Associate Professor.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

Please note that the candidate holding the announced position is expected to work with critical national objects and infrastructure in Norway. Candidates with the potential of not fulfilling requirement for security clearance, access clearance and authorization as described in the Act Relating to National Security, cannot be considered for the position.

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 501 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering (PhD Programme) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
