Research topicThe PhD Fellow will work on the project: Responsible Leadership, Career Development and Female Academics: Fostering Inclusive Academic Environments in the Changing Higher Education Landscape, affiliated with the research group -Education, Work and Social Cohesion (EduWorkSoCo) at Faculty of Social Sciences. This research group develops knowledge, methodology, and cutting- edge approaches for an innovative, dynamic, and diverse academic working life.
Higher education is under tremendous changes, characterized by intensified internationalisation, digitalization, and marketization. These trends have implications for academic working life, as they create new challenges and opportunities for career development. Female academics historically face a range of challenges in academic working life, including, for example, gender bias, lack of support and recognition, and work-life balance issues. Despite the development of supportive policies and practices, networking opportunities, and mentoring programs, female academics continuously report their disadvantages in the workplace. It is important to address the structural and cultural barriers that prevent women's participation and progress in academic life. This calls for a determined effort to encourage greater diversity and inclusion, to support and acknowledge the achievements by female researchers, and to develop policies and practices that enable females to balance their personal and professional life.
This PhD project investigates the intersection between responsible leadership in higher education, the professional advancement of female academics, and the evolving academic landscape. It discusses and explores the possibilities and opportunities to address challenges and support equitable career development for female academics in higher education. With this PhD project, we aim to provide insights that can inform policy and practice in academic settings, and stress the importance of promoting a culture of responsible leadership in academic institutions to support the career development of female academics and to ensure the equitable and sustainable development of higher education.
