The Niels Bohr international Academy invites applicants for a PhD fellowship with Asst. Prof. Berislav Buca in studying the emergence of complex dynamics in quantum many-body systems. The project is part of the research project “Complex dynamics of non-stationary quantum matter”, which is financed by the Villum Foundation through a Villum Young Investigator Grant.
Start date is expected to be as soon as possible.
The project The project aims to study emergence of complex dynamics in quantum many-body systems from the microscopic laws of quantum physics and will directly tie into various ongoing research directions in non-equilibrium quantum physics including dissipative and light-induced many-body engineering, quantum many- body non-ergodic dynamics (e.g. quantum many-body scars) and quantum information processing. Connection with experiments will be sought when possible. The project is based on unconventional algebraic principles discovered by the PI which are already finding broad applications ranging from operator algebras, through novel passive quantum error correcting algorithms in realistic quantum computing platforms to computing complex dynamics in driven quantum matter experiments. As a part of the PhD the student will have the opportunity to learn and contribute to developing new theoretical approaches to solving wide ranges of quantum many-body physics relevant to condensed matter physics, quantum computing and quantum science and technology, more broadly.
Who are we looking for? We are looking for candidates with an interest in fundamental theoretical quantum research and condensed matter. The candidate should have an education background focusing on topics related to non-equilibrium and many-body physics, e.g. open quantum systems, advanced statistical physics, modern condensed matter theory. The ideal candidate will have a very strong analytical and mathematical background. Similarly, experience with advanced numerical algorithms for simulating many-body systems, e.g. TEBD, DMRG is desirable. Special consideration will be given to candidates with previous research experience in the field.
Our group and research, and what we offer The group currently consists of PI Asst. Prof. Berislav Buca (https: // nbi.ku.dk/ansatte/?pure=da/persons/773481) with expertise in non- equilibrium quantum physics with an emphasis on analytical approaches. The group has an external PhD student at Oxford University and will recruit a postdoctoral researcher concurrently with this call. The group is a part of The Condensed Matter Theory at the Niels Bohr International Academy, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen, located in Copenhagen.

The PhD programme A three year full-time study within the framework of the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme), if you already have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master's degree.
Qualifications needed for the PhD programme To be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master's degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. Physics or Astrophysics. Terms of employment in the regular programme Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.
Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.
The terms of employment and salary are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC). The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.
Responsibilities and tasks in the PhD programme • Complete and pass the MSc education in accordance with the curriculum of the MSc programme (ONLY when you are attending the integrated MSc and PhD programme) • Carry through an independent research project under supervision • Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE • Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad • Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities • Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals • Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project
We are looking for the following qualifications: • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project • Ideally, relevant publications in the field of non-equilibrium and/or many- body theory • A strong analytical and mathematical background • Knowledge of advanced numerical algorithms, e.g. DMRG
