PhD Fellowship in Geological Sciences Job description

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a PhD Fellowship in PhD Fellowship in Geological Sciences at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Energy Resources.

This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development through a PhD education leading to a doctoral degree.

The hired candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Science and Technology. The education includes relevant courses amounting to about six months of study, a dissertation based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, relevant academic communication, a trial lecture and public defence. The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively.

Research topic

The PhD Fellow will be affiliated with the project titled "Mapping peat volumes using multiphysics and GIS” and will model peat volumes with the intention that these volumes may help to better quantify stored CO2.

Peatland is an important ecosystem that has several functions from contributing to water regulation to storing terrestrial soil carbon. Peatland stores a large quantity of soil carbon and total carbon, but the estimated amount varies widely (Statens Vegvesen, 2015). This sensitive ecosystem is threatened by major roadworks in Norway (e.g., expansion and rerouting of E39) and the construction of windmill farms. Determining the climate impact of disturbed peat requires accurate depth (and volume) estimates due to the variation of stored carbon to peat depth. Estimating peat thickness needs improvement to be more reliable and act as an accurate predictor; however, field surveys are time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, a remote sensing method coupled with calibration cores and shallow geophysical measurements could provide a solution. The project will combine geographic information, multi-physics (e.g., resistivity, electromagnetics and seismic), and machine learning in order to create spatial data sets to model and predict peat volumes.

Project proposal

As an applicant, you must prepare a preliminary project proposal for a doctoral project within the subject area, which explains the problem, relevance, theoretical and methodological approach. Your preliminary project proposal will be included in the application assessment.

During the first three months of the employment period, the project proposal and progress plan will be further developed in cooperation with your supervisors and completed for the final plan for the PhD-project. A project proposal template can be found here.

Qualification requirements

We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed a five-year master degree (3+2) within geological sciences, preferably acquired recently; or who possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate. Master's degrees in other subject areas may also be relevant if you have a concentration of geology subjects at BSc or MSc level (20 ECTS or more)

It will be considered and advantage if you have experience in: peat ecosystems, field work (mapping, sampling, etc), geographic information systems, geophysics (eg. GPR, seismic processing), and basic coding (Python preferred). The selected candidate must be willing to participate in field work.

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Stavanger both the grade for your master's thesis and the weighted average grade of your master's degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade.

Applicants with an education from an institution with a different grade scale than A-F, and/or with other types of credits than sp/ECTS, must attach a confirmed conversion scale that shows how the grades can be compared with the Norwegian A-F scale and a Diploma Supplement or similar that explains the scope of the subjects that are included in the education. You can use these conversion scales to calculate your points for admission.

Requirements for competence in English

A good proficiency in English is required for anyone attending the PhD program. International applicants must document this by taking one of the following tests with the following results:

TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test (IBT). Minimum result: 90

IELTS – International English Language Testing Service. Minimum result: 6.5

Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) from the University of Cambridge

PTE Academic – Pearson Test of English Academic. Minimum result: 62
