PhD Fellowship in Brain Medical Imaging Job description

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a PhD Fellowship in Brain Medical Imaging, more specifically in Metabolic and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. The position is vacant from Spring 2023.

This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development through a PhD education leading to a doctoral degree.

The hired candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Science and Technology. The education includes relevant courses amounting to about six months of study, a dissertation based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, relevant academic communication, a trial lecture and public defence. The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively, or four years with both research and 25% compulsory duties. This will be clarified in the recruitment process.

Project Description

Magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy (MRS) explicitly examines several endogenous tissue metabolites at a single acquisition, providing early response detection of cellular metabolism in vivo. MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) or multi-voxel spectroscopy enables volumetric metabolite imaging, generating spatial metabolic information of the volume of interest. Central cognitive abilities, such as working memory, episodic memory, executive function, and their neural underpinnings are highly age-sensitive. Contemporary functional neuroimaging techniques, in particular, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have provided great opportunities to investigate the brain neural network structure and activities non-invasively. fMRI can be obtained at rest – termed resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) – providing functional connectivity maps, revealing a network architecture that spans large-scale circuits in the brain. It has been suggested that integrity of different metabolites alter with different conditions, such as normal aging, with implications for brain function and in turn cognition. Using multimodal imaging, we aim to investigate the relationships between different metabolites and functional brain architecture across the adult lifespan.

The research work will encompass developing medical diagnostic imaging technologies for precision medicine, in particular, in brain aging and neuropathological investigations. This project examines new solutions to enhance in vivo mapping of metabolic alterations, functional activities, and tissue microstructures in the brain. To enhance the efficiency of the MRI- related methods, we continuously work on improving data acquisition, data reconstruction, artificial intelligence (AI)-based analysis, computational neuroscience approaches, and programming of the MRI systems.

The successful candidate will be involved in our developing works to provide efficient and robust acquisition protocols for detecting metabolic maps from volumetric 3-dimensional regions of interest in the brain and to develop AI approaches in data analysis of functional MRI and metabolic MRSI data. We have access to required facilities such as computational GPU power for AI experiments at UiS, longitudinal fMRI data, and 3 Tesla MRI systems at the Stavanger University Hospital. We have national and international collaborators and AI research groups at UiS, which offers a competitive platform to develop multidisciplinary skills and perform successful research.

Qualification requirements

We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed a five-year master degree (3+2) within in physics, biomedical engineering, applied mathematics, computational/cognitive neuroscience, signal /image processing, preferably acquired recently; or who possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate.

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Stavanger both the grade for your master's thesis and the weighted average grade of your master's degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade. If you finish your education (master's degree) in the spring of 2023 you are also welcome to apply.

Applicants with an education from an institution with a different grade scale than A-F, and/or with other types of credits than sp/ECTS, must attach a confirmed conversion scale that shows how the grades can be compared with the Norwegian A-F scale and a Diploma Supplement or similar that explains the scope of the subjects that are included in the education. You can use these conversion scales to calculate your points for admission.

Emphasis is also placed on:

  • strong programming skills (e.g., C/C++, MATLAB, Python, and Keras/Tensorflow)
  • prior experience with brain image-analysis packages (such as SPM, FSL, AFNI, and FreeSurfer)
  • previous experience in data analysis with MRSI (e.g., using LCModel or jMRUI), resting-state fMRI, and pulse sequence programming
  • previous experience in statistical methods and platforms (e.g., correlation and ROC analyses, and platforms such as SPSS or GraphPad)
  • prior experience and knowledge in algorithm development and deep learning
  • motivation and potential for research within the field
  • professional and personal skills for completing the doctoral degree within the timeframe
  • ability to work independently and in a team, be innovative and creative
  • ability to work structured and handle a heavy workload
  • having a good command of both oral and written English
  • Requirements for competence in English

    A good proficiency in English is required for anyone attending the PhD program. International applicants must document this by taking one of the following tests with the following results:

  • TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test (IBT). Minimum result: 90
  • IELTS – International English Language Testing Service. Minimum result: 6.5
  • Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) from the University of Cambridge
  • PTE Academic – Pearson Test of English Academic. Minimum result: 62
