PhD fellows in maritime learning analytics The position

Two PhD positions are available at the Department of Technology and Safety (ITS), Faculty of Science and Technology in maritime learning analytics for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD).

The positions are for a period of three years. The objective of the positions is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the National Joint PhD Program in Nautical Operations is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

ITS is organised under the Faculty of Science and Technology and is located at two campuses: Tromsø and Harstad. The department has approximately 90 employees and approximately 500 students. It offers undergraduate, master's and PhD degree programmes as well as research in the areas of nautical science, aviation, societal safety, environment and international preparedness.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The project

These PhD positions will be funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research project entitled "Integrating Adaptive Learning in Maritime Simulator-Based Education and Training with Intelligent Learning System (i-MASTER)". The primary objective of the i-MASTER project is to study and develop an intelligent learning system with learning analytics and adaptive learning functions for students during both distance and on-site Maritime Education and Training (MET). The project will explore how to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist teachers and students during distance learning and on-site maritime education, and make learning support available, anytime and anywhere, to students.

The i-MASTER project is led by UiT-The Arctic University of Norway. The Research Consortium, includes: University of Gothenburg (Sweden), Fraunhofer CML (Germany), Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) (Sweden), TERP Global (Norway), University of South-eastern Norway (Norway), Novia University of Applied Sciences (Aboa Mare Maritime Academy and Training Centre) (Finland) and Vienna University of Economics and Business (Austria).

As a PhD candidate on this research project, you would have the opportunity to collaborate with the project consortium, to be included in the multi- disciplinary team with academic and industrial experts, and make a meaningful contribution for the MET society.

You would perform research on maritime learning analytics, design and develop novel algorithms and learning platform, disseminate your research and findings at international conferences and scientific journals, and complete a PhD thesis.

  • Qualifications

    These positions requires a completed master's degree before commencement in the position, preferably in one of the following fields:

  • Maritime operations, nautical science, or another relevant maritime degree
  • Computer science, informatics, software engineering or an IT related field
  • Applicants must document fluency of in English and be able to work in an international environment. Nordic applicants can document their English capabilities by attaching their high school diploma.

    In addition to the academic qualification requirement, the candidates are expected to demonstrate at least one of the followings:

  • Knowledge and experience in machine learning, data analytics and visualization
  • Skills in Python, JavaScript, PHP, C++ or other programming languages.
  • Creating, designing, deploying and supporting software
  • Ability to develop web-based interfaces and environments
  • It will be in the candidates' advantage to have:

  • Experience with maritime education and training activities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work in multicultural project team
  • Ability to communicate quickly and effectively
  • Good collaboration skills
  • In the assessment of the applications, the emphasis will be placed on:

  • The applicant's estimated academic and technical competence to complete the PhD project within the timeframe and contribute to the objectives and tasks of i-MASTER.
  • The applicant's qualifications, experience and academic performance
  • We will also emphasize motivation and personal suitability for the position. As many as possible should have the opportunity to undertake organized research training. If you already hold a PhD or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.

    Admission to the PhD programme

    For employment in the PhD position, you must be qualified for admission to the PhD programme at the National Joint PhD Program in Nautical Operations and participate in organized doctoral studies within the employment period.

    The PhD program is organized as a joint degree between the following four national higher education institutions offering professional maritime education:

  • Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
  • UiT- The Arctic University of Norway (UiT)
  • University of South-Eastern Norway (USN)
  • Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL)
  • Admission normally requires:

  • A bachelor's degree of 180 ECTS and a master's degree of 120 ECTS, or an integrated master's degree of 300 ECTS.
  • A master's thesis with a scope corresponding to at least 30 ECTS for a master's degree of 120 ECTS.
  • A master's thesis with a scope corresponding to at least 20 ECTS for an integrated master's degree of 300 ECTS.
  • A weighted grade average for the master's degree equal to B or better is normally required for admission. The candidate must also have a grade of B or better on the master's thesis. Exceptions to these admission rules can be considered if the candidate can document particular suitability for a PhD education.     Applicants with a foreign education will be subjected to an evaluation of whether the educational background is equal to Norwegian higher education, following national guidelines from NOKUT. Depending on which country the education is from, one or two additional years of university education may be required to fulfil admission requirements, e.g. a 4-year bachelor's degree and a 2-year master's degree.

    A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the PhD Fellow has already completed parts of their research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position PhD Fellow, research assistant, or the like in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.

    Remuneration for the position of PhD Fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
