The Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (Leibniz-IPHT) offers the following part time position (50%) in the Department Spectroscopy and Imaging, Work Group Raman and IR spectroscopic analysis , expected to start at May 1st, 2023 or at the next possible time :

PhD candidate (f/m/d)

The position is l imited for 3 years. An extension will be sought if suitable.

The Leibniz-IPHT is a university independent research institute with close connection to the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena and member of the Leibniz association.

Position description:

The research focuses the development of an innovative detection method for micropollutants in water. The basis for the efficient detection of different pollutant classes will be realized by combining a noble metal particle array with a molecule-selective method, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Nanoparticles will be arranged as spots in a nanoparticle array and functionalized with aptamers. These DNA-based receptors primarily bind selected micropollutants, such as carbamazepine, diclofenac, and benzotriazole (leading indicators in wastewater samples for contamination). Binding to the aptamer receptors occurs by molecular affinity and provides initial information about the contaminant class and molecular properties. By employing SERS as readout tool, a molecular-specific fingerprint information is achieved accompanied by a high sensitivity (signal enhancement by 4 to 6 orders of magnitude). This position is embedded in the Thuringian water innovation cluster (ThWIC), which aims sustainable solutions to ensure water availability and quality.

Your field of activity:

The PhD candidate aims to develop the processes and measurement protocols for the SERS measurements of different target analytes in aqueous matrices. The candidate is expected to have already hand-on experience in the plasmonic nanostructures formation, vibrational spectroscopy (especially, Raman and its enhancing techniques) and (optical) characterization of plasmonic-active nanostructures. The candidate is expected to work independently and actively participate in all research activities, the preparation of reports, scientific papers, presentations.

Your qualification:
  • Master of Science in Chemistry, Physics or Photonics or Master of Engineering with strong background in Nanosciences or Photonics or related degrees.
  • Your expertise and knowledge:
  • Strong background in vibrational spectroscopy
  • Experience in plasmonics and Raman spectroscopy
  • Experience in wet-chemical processes such as fabrication of colloidal solutions or water analytics
  • Good English communication and writing skills
  • What we offer:
  • An integrative and interdisciplinary work environment: Being situated on the Beutenberg Campus in Jena, the Leibniz IPHT hosts more than 400 employees from around the world who work at the interface of physics, biochemistry, technology, data sciences, and medical sciences to develop sensing solutions of tomorrow.
