About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Wireless-powered communication can benefit sensor networks in a number of ways. One of the main advantages of wireless-powered communication is that it can help to extend the lifespan of the sensors in the network. Rather than relying on batteries, which can run out of power and need to be replaced, wireless-powered sensors can receive energy from radio frequency (RF) signals. This means that the sensors can operate for longer periods of time without requiring maintenance, which can be particularly useful in remote or hard-to-reach locations. In addition, wireless-powered communication can also help to improve the reliability and scalability of the sensor network by allowing sensors to communicate more effectively and efficiently with each other, and with the wider network infrastructure. Overall, wireless-powered communication has the potential to significantly enhance the performance and functionality of sensor networks, making them more cost-effective and useful for a wide range of applications.

The PhD candidate will work on developing novel transmission schemes for wireless-powered communication systems in future networks, using recent technologies such as intelligent reflective surfaces or fluid antennas. The aim of the research is to enable energy-efficient and sustainable communication in emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, and beyond, by exploiting the advantages of wireless power transfer and advanced antenna technologies. The candidate will investigate various aspects of wireless-powered communication, including modulation and coding strategies, power transfer efficiency, and energy harvesting techniques, and will explore how recent antenna and reflective surface technologies can be integrated to improve the system performance. The research will contribute to the development of practical solutions that can enhance the reliability, scalability, and sustainability of future wireless networks, while minimizing their environmental impact. The PhD candidate will work in a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment and will have access to state-of-the- art facilities and resources. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in wireless communications, signal processing, or related fields, and should be passionate about exploring new technologies and developing innovative solutions for real-world problems.

Your immediate leader is the Head of Department.

Duties of the position
  • Undertaking the necessary courses (30 ECTS) as part of the PhD programme.
