About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Using wood as a structural material is continuously gaining more attention due to the increasing demand for sustainable infrastructure. The characteristics such as lightweight, appropriate compressive and tensile strength, and being a renewable and environmentally friendly resource are among the main reasons for increasing interest in the utilization of timber in structures. On the other hand, using timber in some structural elements, such as floor slabs and bridge decks, brings some challenges regarding stiffness, acoustic performance, and fire safety. Thus, timber-concrete composites (TCC) have become popular in renovating and constructing these elements.

The degree of composite action between timber and concrete is one of the main factors affecting composite efficiency. Different methods, such as mechanical fasteners, notches, perforated steel strips, and adhesives, can be used to connect timber and concrete; each method can lead to some challenges. Furthermore, long-term effects such as creep and shrinkage in the materials can affect the performance of the composite. The sustainability of TCC is the other issue that needs to be enhanced to suit future demands.

This Ph.d position will mainly focus on the performance of the TCC and the existing challenges of using these composites in the building and construction industry. The Ph.D. candidate will be a member of the group of Green and Advaced Building Materials at NTNU and will cooperate with existing research activities at the department, such as the SirkTre Project.

You will report to the head of the department.

Duties of the position
  • A state-of-the-art report on how different shear connectors or modification methods can affect the performance of TCCs.
  • Experimental investigation of selected materials and processes to achieve intended material properties.
  • Characterization and modelling of the material properties and environmental impact assessment of the investigated materials.
  • Documentation of the production or treatment processes for the investigated materials in forms of patent applications, scientific papers and project report.
  • Undertake the necessary courses (30 ECTS) as part of the PhD program.
  • Contribute to the academic environment at department, faculty and NTNU

If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program.
  • Good English language skills, written and oral
  • The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant
