The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences. People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed.

The faculty's research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. The FHSE offers six Bachelor and twenty Master degrees and a doctoral school providing students with the necessary knowledge and high-qualified skills to succeed in their future career.

Your Role...

The Ph.D. student will be part of a dynamic team of researchers working on a large-scale mixed-methods project on youth and digitalisation, focusing on life chances and inequalities in the digital society. The main task will be to prepare a Ph.D. thesis in the field of digitalisation and life chances of young people, mainly based on the analysis of data from the Youth Survey Luxembourg (YSL). The Ph.D. candidate will contribute to the Luxembourg Youth Report and engage in policy-relevant analysis and knowledge sharing with stakeholders.

The candidate will play a central role in the preparation and implementation of the next wave of the YSL. This representative, large-scale survey covers a range of social and economic issues and is of great importance to researchers and policy makers.

The Ph.D. student will join the Youth Research Group within the Centre for Childhood and Youth Research (CCY) at the Department of Social Sciences. The CCY consists of a multidisciplinary research team that investigates the conditions and opportunity structures of growing up against the background of social change and inequalities. It maintains close links with other institutes and relevant organisations within and outside the university, both nationally and internationally.

Tasks

  • Prepare a cumulative Ph.D. thesis in the domain of digitalization and life chances among young people (mainly based on quantitative analysis of YSL data)
  • Participate in national and international conferences
  • Contribute to Luxembourgish Youth Report and other research publications
  • Engage in policy-relevant analyses and dissemination of results to stakeholders
  • Contribute to preparation and implementation of the next wave of the YSL 2023/24 (esp. module on digitalization)
  • What we expect from you…
  • Master diploma, M.A. in sociology or another relevant discipline
  • Experience in design surveys and collecting data (e.g., using Qualtrics or similar)
  • Experience in managing, and analysing survey data (e.g., using R, Stata)
  • Strong interest in policy-relevant research
  • Willingness to engage in teamwork in research groups
  • Excellent command of at least two of the following languages: English, French, German (written and spoken); Luxembourgish is considered an asset
