The Department of Engineering Cybernetics has a vacancy for a PhD position
PhD Candidate in Semantic Simultaneous Localization and Mapping This is NTNUNTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus in professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.
At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.
You will find more information about working at NTNU and the application process here.
About the jobThe PhD candidate will work on the challenging research problem of resilient autonomy in complex industrial environments where precise mapping and reasoning over the different objects and structures is necessary. Accordingly, the envisioned research focuses on the problem of “Semantic and multi-modal Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM)”. In particular, the envisioned research will aim to combine diverse sensor data (including from visual cameras, and automotive-grade LiDARs) in order to infer a high- fidelity map of the environment – and the pose of the robot in it – in real- time while simultaneously performing semantic scene segmentation reflecting the distinct structures within an industrial environment. The envisioned contributions shall break new ground in the domain of robot autonomy and Spatial AI with a particular focus on a holistic view on the SLAM and semantic segmentation problem. The activity will be part of a research project that further involves industry participation.
The position is part of the Autonomous Robots Lab activities in resilient robotic autonomy across diverse operational conditions. The Autonomous Robots Lab has leading research in robotic autonomy and demonstrated performance in a collection of world-class projects funded by both European and US sources. For more details about our team and our publication track record, see: https: // www. autonomousrobotslab.com/publications.html .
