PhD candidate in Circular Economy/ Sustainable Operations Management (1.0 fte)
within the Operations, Planning, Accounting and Control (OPAC) Group of the School of Industrial Engineering.
The School of Industrial Engineering (IE) is one of the longest- established IE Schools in Europe, with a strong presence in the international research and education community, especially in the field of Operations Management (OM) and Operations Research (OR). OM and OR are part of the core of the undergraduate IE program. The graduate programs (MSc and PhD) in Operations Management & Logistics attract top-level students from all over the world. Researchers in the school participate in industrial activities with members of the European Supply Chain Forum, among others.
The Operations, Planning, Accounting, and Control Group (OPAC) houses talented researchers conducting research on the planning and control of operational processes, both within the manufacturing and service sectors. These include:
Research is generally quantitative in nature, while many of the researchers also engage in empirical research. All research is embedded in Beta, the KNAW- recognized research school for Operations Management & Logistics.
PhD project Sustainability goals put pressure on companies to reduce their carbon footprint. As a consequence, companies try to reuse, recycle and remanufacture their products and transition to a circular ecosystem. The aim of this PhD project is to support this transition and study the contribution and subsequent alignment of the supply chain partners to the circular activities. In particular, this PhD projects aims to answer:
This position is part of a larger research consortium named “Transitioning to a Circular Business Ecosystem”. The consortium includes a large and broad set of companies (logistic provider, manufacturing and chemical companies). In addition to this position, one other PhD and one PostDoc will be hired.
We are interested in students with a solid background in deterministic and stochastic operations research techniques, analytical modelling and inventory management.
Tasks The PhD student is expected to conduct research, write a PhD thesis and research papers on the research project, and participate in the PhD education program. A small part of the position involves teaching in courses offered by the group. The research will be executed under the supervision of dr. Zümbül Atan and dr. Christina Imdahl.
Job requirementsFor the PhD project, applicants should have completed (or be close to completion of) a Master's degree in operations management, operations research, econometrics, mathematics, industrial engineering, or a related field with a solid background in quantitative research methods. Fluency in English is required.
