About the position

This PhD project is part of the new research project: ‘curbing Fisheries' and Aquaculture's Maritime air Emissions' (FAME) that targets new knowledge and expertise to support the Norwegian government objective to decarbonize maritime transport in fisheries and aquaculture.

The Project will be implemented in cooperation with research partners Institute of Transport Economics and Universities of South-Eastern Norway and Turku, Finland, alongside key stakeholders from the public sector (including Directorate of Fisheries, Norwegian Environment Agency and Norwegian Maritime Authority) and the industry (including Kystrederiene, Fiskarlaget and Fiskebåt). It is a Collaborative and Knowledge-building Project funded by the Research Council of Norway.

While Norway has become a front-runner in the diffusion of low and zero emission transport technologies for private cars, other modes now receive attention. The Government requests policy instruments to promote a green transition of fishing and aquaculture vessels. Decision support systems using optimization are ideal for identifying cost-effective technical and operational measures to mitigate air emissions. However, their application in the seafood industry is currently limited. The PhD project aims to fill the knowledge gap by developing optimization models at the regional scale to identify cost effective and business feasible solutions for emission reduction. Novel aspects of the PhD research include abatement cost estimation and analysis of technological and financial risks as barriers to fleet renewal and adoption of low/zero-emission technology.
