The Leibniz Centre for Photonics in Infection Research ( LPI , https:// lpi-jena.de) is a project of the National Roadmap for Research Infrastructures of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). As one of the supporting institutions of the LPI, the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technologies ( Leibniz-IPHT , https: // www. leibniz-ipht.de/) is looking to recruit a

PhD candidate (f/m/d)

for 3 years part time (50 %). An extension might be discussed if suitable.

The LPI is being established by a consortium of four supporting institutions (Leibniz-HKI, Leibniz-IPHT, FSU Jena, Universitätsklinikum Jena) In future, it will combine photonic technologies with infection research and thus contribute to the development of new methods for diagnosis, monitoring and therapy for human medicine. Research results will be transferred to clinical practice along the entire value chain. The LPI's research program is divided into basic technologies, in which the four supporting institutions jointly address various scientific and technological focal points in an interdisciplinary approach. As a user-open translational infrastructure, LPI makes newly developed demonstrators and methods available to external partners within the framework of joint projects.

The open PhD position comprises the collaboration in the development and validation of a mid-IR-measurement platform and associated experimental setups.

Your tasks:
  • research on different NDIR- and ATR-measurement concepts
  • development and realization of optical experimental setups
  • concepts and implementation of test measurements
  • research and evaluation of different reference samples
  • evaluation of optical and instrumentational components
  • support of the technical realization of a demonstrator
  • collaboration in the verification and validation of the platform
  • Your qualification:
  • Master's degree in Physics or equivalent
  • We expect:
  • substantial knowledge in mathematics
  • practical and theoretical knowledge in measuring techniques
  • theoretical and practical knowledge concerning IR spectroscopy
  • practical experience with FTIR spectrometers
  • We offer:
  • Your highly relevant contribution to a globally unique infrastructure: The LPI will be a globally unique infrastructure for the development of market-ready solutions: LPI bridges the gap from application research to marketable products. You will be part of the initiation team to build up the infrastructure.
  • An integrative and interdisciplinary work environment: Being part of the LPI will empower you to translate cutting-edge photonic technologies into products to fight infections – and all of this in a truly interdisciplinary team covering the areas of physics, biochemistry, technology, data sciences, and medical sciences. The LPI brings excellent research, technology development and everyday clinical practice in close proximity to each other.
  • Focusing your effort on the unmet medical need to fight infections successfully: Photonic technologies in combination with microfluidics, micro- and nanotechnologies, biotechnology, molecular techniques and artificial intelligence will revolutionize diagnostics and companion diagnostics for alternative therapies. At the LPI, compact devices for rapid and unambiguous diagnosis of infections and new therapeutic approaches (e. g. with new anti-infective agents, cell-based therapies and nanoparticles) are being researched and developed.
  • A thorough and comprehensive personal training: Transferring good practices in scientific working and outreach is one of our main focus points. We'll teach everything that is needed for a career inside and outside of academia in a respectful and enjoyable way. Moreover, plenty of workshops and opportunities for scientific exchange are offered by the Leibniz IPHT, as well as the Abbe School of Photonics and the Graduate Academy of the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena.
  • World-class equipment and facilities: The Leibniz IPHT offers a large variety of physics, chemistry, and biology labs at highest standards. Moreover, it holds state-of-the-art fiber-drawing and clean-room facilities (incl. lithography units), as well as microfluidics fabrication and big data computing units. Simply everything your interdisciplinary heart beats for.
  • A family-friendly working environment with a variety of offers for families: parent-child room, campus kindergarten places, family events
  • Flexible working time models , 30 days vacation/year, special annual payment, bridging days, VMT job ticket
  • Jena - City of Science: A young and lively town with a vibrant local cultural agenda!
  • Salary:

The employment relationship is concluded with the Leibniz-IPHT , the remuneration is based on the provisions of the TV-L.
