OFFER DESCRIPTION
The GENES and DISEASE Group at the Department of Dermatology & the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna (MUV) , Austria , is seeking a highly motivated international early stage researcher (ESR) to complete a research project part of the CANCERPREV Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network ( MSCA- ITN , grant agreement No 859860).
80% of patients with advanced cancer develop Cancer-associated Cachexia (CAC) and 1/3 die of it. CAC is characterized by weight loss, fat and muscle atrophy, fatigue, weakness and appetite loss. There are no biomarkers to detect the onset of CAC and few strategies to prevent or ameliorate the condition. The ESR will investigate the function of inflammatory mediators in CAC and explore how inflammation and the immune system impact on muscle and fat loss observed in CAC patients. Work has already been done on the project and the goal of this one-year position is to continue and complete the project (publication & dissemination). The research will involve mouse genetics, cell biology and molecular biology approaches; therefore, experience in molecular and cell biology based assays and possibly mouse handling and experimentation is desired.
BenefitsThis position is for one year and the ESR will be part of a competitive network of research teams with seven host academic institutions and eight associate NGOs and private companies located in nine EU countries. MSCA ITNs offer early-stage researchers the opportunity to improve their research skills, join established research teams and enhance their career prospects. The CANCERPREV network's expertise spans molecular and cellular cancer research, human genetics and epidemiology, bioinformatics and mathematics, biomarkers and drug development. The host laboratory has a documented track record in mouse genetics and cancer research using preclinical models and is located in a research department of the Medical University of Vienna with strong partnership with clinical research.
The MSCA programme offers a highly attractive EU-funded contract that includes competitive salary, mobility allowance and social benefits. In addition to the individual scientific project, the ITN fellow will benefit from further continuing education, which includes scientific skills courses , as well as active participation in workshops and conferences. This is an ideal position for a young researcher interested in enhancing her/his career perspectives in both the academic and non-academic sectors.
Eligibility criteriaApplicants MUST comply with the three MSCA-ITN eligibility criteria:
1) Early-stage researchers (ESR), are those who are, at the time of recruitment by the host laboratory, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date they obtained the degree (eg. Masters in any discipline of Life Science, or MD degree) which formally entitles them to embark on a PhD, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in Austria, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was started. Please note that applicants cannot already hold a PhD and that although completion of a Master/MD degree is not required to apply, the degree should have been granted before the start of the work contract.
2) International mobility: Researchers are required to undertake trans- national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. This means that at the time of hiring by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Austria for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.
3) English language: All training and research activities will be in English and candidate must demonstrate good knowledge of written and spoken English.
Selection processApplicants should send a single PDF in English with cover letter, CV, referee contacts to: [email protected] and/or [email protected]
Applicants fulfilling job requirements and all eligibility criteria will be contacted and selected through remote (1st step) and on site (2nd step) interview.
