    Microwave optomechanics, which studies interactions between micro/Nano- electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) and microwave photons, offers an interesting platform to manipulate and to detect nano-scale mechanical displacements 1. They have exhibited potential in serving for signal processing and sensing in the quantum region. The objective of this Ph.D work is to develop novel NEMS/MEMS hybrid microwave quantum circuits that allow to have strong coupling effects between NEMS arrays and the microwave cavity, and to manipulate mechanical motions by both radio frequency signals and microwave photons at the same time. This Ph.D project is based on our recent achievements in both silicon nitride (SiN) membrane nanoelectromechanical resonators 2-3 and electrical circuit modeling of microwave optomechanics 4.

    The Ph.D candidate will perform both COMSOL multi-physics simulations and simple analytical calculations, in order to design microwave optomechanical circuit. This design will help students to understand basic principles of microwave optomechanical quantum circuits and give students access to this challenging domain. The motivated candidate will perform device nanofabrication in IEMN clean-room with strong technical support from engineers and researchers. The student will also profit a low-noise RF-MEMS setup, which has been developed in the team, and perform high frequency (microwave and radio frequency) meaurement to characterize device performance at low temperature. She/He will participate/benefit from fruitful collaborations with CNRS-NEEL for experiment and LOMA for theorical analysis.

    Requirement of candidates :

    (1) Master degree (if degress obtained in Europe, priority)

    (2) Background in physics (priority) or engineering (exclude material science), you can solve easily second order equations

    (3) Programming python/matlab, or experience of numerical simulations in electromagnetic fields

    (4) Knowledge of high frequency electronics

    (5) Clean-room experience (not mandatory but if YES, priority)

    (6) Working in a team, speak&write English !

Candidates will receive technical support from clean room engineers and electronic engineers. IEMN's research activities cover the fields of materials physics, microtechnology-microsystems, microelectronics, and optoelectronics. The lab is located in Lille (one hour from Paris by TGV).
