Master thesis: Ancient microbiomes and microbial gene pools based on ancient

DNA (aDNA) metagenomics of cryo-environments

Background Cryo-environments provide ideal conditions for the long-term preservation of DNA, thus representing an incredible archive of organismic information dating back thousands of years. By studying environmental ancient DNA (aDNA), we have the unprecedented opportunity to link climate with biological evolution over geological timescales. Our main aim is to elucidate how ancient microbiomes evolved and responded to environmental and climatic changes that occurred in the past, with respect to both biodiversity and functionality. Where: Section ‘Polar Terrestrial Environmental Systems' (Potsdam), Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research

Tasks

  • Computational analysis of aDNA shotgun metagenomic data from ancient ice chronosequences
  • Characterization of ancient microbiomes and microbial gene pools
  • Analysis of biodiversity and community changes in response to climate and environmental conditions over the past 50,000 years
  • Analysis of ancient functional genes to infer on paleo-ecosystem functioning
  • Requirements

  • We are looking for Master students in Biology/Microbiology, Ecology, Bioinformatics or related disciplines
  • Interest in microbial ecology, genetics and paleobiodiversity
  • Knowledge of programming language for statistical analysis (e.g. R) is desirable
  • Good proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Further Information Start: November/December 2022 at AWI-Potsdam.
