The recruited person will take part in the activities of the Centre for the History of Arab and Medieval Sciences and Philosophies of the UMR SPHERE and in those of the researchers in the history of Arabic sciences and philosophy of the UMR SPHERE.
Doctoral research by a student whose work will be on the theme of the present offer "Logic, Ontology and Theology between falsafa and kalām: Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā) and the Avicennian tradition". By studying upstream the main authors of the muʿtazilite and ašʿarite kalām (notably Abu ʿAli Al-Ǧubbāʾī and al- Ašʿarī) and downstream the Avicennian tradition of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries (notably Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī, al-Qūnawī or al-Taftazānī and his pupil Al- Bukhārī), the hired student will have the twofold aim of reconstructing the influence that the ontology of the kalām had on the core of Avicenna's onto-theological conception (particularly in his use of the notions of necessity and contingency in the definition of God) and of re- evaluating in a fresh way the real place of his work in the authors who, in his name, claimed to uphold the doctrine of the waḥdat al-wujūd. The thesis will be co-directed with prof. Marwan Rashed of Sorbonne University.
Additional commentsThe recruited person will be member of the SPHERE Laboratory and will be affiliated with the Ecole Doctorale 623 " Savoirs, Sciences, Education " (https: // ed623.u-paris.fr) of the Université Paris Cité. He or she must identify, translate and analyse texts from Avicenna's corpus at the heart of his logical-theological doctrine of necessity and contingency (especially in the Ilāhiyyāt of the Šifāʾ, in the Išārāt wa-t-tanbīhāt, and in the Kitāb al- Naǧāt). He or she also has to dentify, translate and analyse the texts of Al- Ǧubbāʾī and al-Ašʿarī which are at the root of the same doctrine, as well as the texts of the main philosophers of the post-Avicennian tradition of the 13th-14th centuries (notably Ṭūsī, Qūnawī, Taftazānī and Bukhārī). Finally, he or she has to participate actively in scientific activities organised by the two supervisors.
