You ‘d like to contribute as a PhD Candidate? Join our Materials Research

and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT's activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is seeking to recruit a PhD student to work on the development of advanced ion – laser interaction concepts for the manipulation, control and modification of ion beams. This project is funded with an FNR CORE award (https: // www. fnr.lu/results-2022-core-call) and intends to combine the two main blocks of competences at the Advanced Instrumentation for Nano-Analytics (AINA) group, namely laser analytics/diagnostics/instrumentation and charged particle optics (CPO) instrumentation.

We are looking for a PhD Student who is expected to strongly contribute to this project through the development of novel concepts for ion – laser interaction and demonstrate its use for the specific control of ion beams with the target of improving existing or creating novel instrumental CPO concepts/devices. These ground-breaking studies will form the basis for various diagnostics and ion manipulation experiments, leading the pathway towards e.g. single ion manipulation and hence quantum computing experiments. The project involves establishing the theoretical background of the interaction principles through calculations and simulation algorithms, the detailed elaboration of the parameters space needed for experimental studies, as well as the hardware design of a novel vacuum CPO apparatus interfaced with advanced laser beams. The PhD student will actively contribute to the design, development, demonstration of the required instrumentation, as well as to the analysis of the scientific results to be obtained. One of the main challenges of the project will be to prove experimentally the benefits of ion – laser interaction for the improvement of CPO devices, as well as integrating the concept at a later stage into existing nano-analytical instruments based on focused ion beams. He/she will have to assess the best technological configuration and the related theoretical and experimental understandings to push the intended concept towards higher technology readiness levels.

The candidate will work closely with highly skilled scientists and engineers in the dynamic environment of the AINA group within LIST's Materials Research & Technology Department. The candidate will acquire highly valued skills in the applications of advanced laser interaction (diagnostic) techniques as well as working with CPO prototype instruments, incorporating vacuum technology concepts. The PhD student will take a main role in the development of the techniques and instruments mentioned above. He/she will coordinate the local research efforts together with input from international project partners. In consultation with the project leader, the PhD student will design and perform relevant experiments, analyze and interpret the results, write scientific articles and disseminate the results in international conferences.
