The Division ESAT-WAVECORE is a multidisciplinary research group of the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) at KU Leuven focusing on a broad range of topic areas ranging from electromagnetic theory, microwave/millimeter wave devices and circuits, to wireless communication systems. This PhD vacancy is in the team of Prof. D. Schreurs, who has long-standing experience in microwave/mm-wave technologies for applications ranging from biomedical diagnostics to wireless communications.

The PhD student will contribute to a European-wide project aiming at developing a truly sustainable and highly flexible IoT system based on the combined use of optical and radiocommunications. The research focuses on the hardware design of a self-powered IoT node and its realization in printed electronics technology. The node is to be dynamically reconfigured to use light or radio for wireless connectivity, as these approaches complement each other. As the performance depends on the characteristics of the RF and light waveforms received by the IoT node, also waveform engineering is part of the research. The performance of the designed IoT node is to be assessed experimentally as part of IoT networks, tailored for realistic use cases.


The candidate:

  • should have a MSc degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent;
  • should be ranked within the top 10% of their class in MSc and BSc, and have exceptional grades;
  • should have a solid background in RF hardware (pcb) design, incl. experimental validation;
  • should have strong communication skills and is fluent in English;
  • should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in an international team;
  • having experience with performing RF connectorized and wireless measurements is a plus;
  • being a first author or co-author in internationally peer-reviewed publications is a plus.
