The Chair of Integrated Systems at TU Munich is offering a Doctoral Researcher position on the topic of SmartNIC-based Hardware Acceleration for Blockchains.

In an increasingly interconnected world with mutually distrustful or partially distrustful stakeholders, implementation of robust and high-performance transaction and smart contract systems has grown in importance. This is demonstrated by the significant rise in interest towards both permissionless and permissioned Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and blockchain-based systems in recent years. With its Proof-of-Stake (PoS)-based design and powerful smart contract language, Algorand is a promising platform for the realization of future systems.

This position is part of the TUM Algorand Center of Excellence SUPPRA. The Algorand Centers of Excellence (ACE) program, funded by the Algorand Foundation, is dedicated to support research, education, development, and social impact of projects in the Blockchain and distributed ledger space. In total, the Algorand Foundation selected 10 centers of excellence globally out of 77 proposals with over 550 participants, representing 46 countries. The projects were evalauted by 27 international experts with various backgrounds.

The TUM project ACE-SUPPRA (Security, Usability, Performance, and Privacy Research in Algorand) was selected for a five year long research initiative grant with educational and outreach elements. ACE-SUPPRA is an interdisciplinary initiative, involving teams of different TUM departments, including the Chair of Integrated Systems, lead by Prof. Andreas Herkersdorf.

Within ACE-SUPPRA the Chair of Integrated Systems is investigating the potential of applying SmartNIC-based hardware acceleration within the Algorand network to increase the performance of the applied incentive, consensus and approval mechanisms in terms of higher throughput and/or lower latencies with special focus on the required message relaying and forwarding functionalities. The effectiveness of offloading specific functions from the CPU cores to a SmartNIC should be demonstrated using an FPGA-based prototype implementation.

Requirements and expectations:

  • M. Sc. degree in computer science, or electrical/computer engineering
  • English language proficiency
  • Interest in blockchain engineering and FPGA-based hardware design
  • Previous experience in scientific methods and – if possible – in the aforementioned fields
  • Core information:

  • Position: Scientific employee with a right to a doctorate (wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiterin (m/w/d) mit Recht auf Promotion)
  • Compensation: Fully funded position (TV-L E13)
  • Working hours: Full time (40.1 h / week)
  • Starting date: As soon as possible
  • Type: Fixed-term contract (2 years, with extensions possible up to 5 years total)
  • Language: English
  • Subject area: Computer Science
  • Research project: TUM Algorand Center of Excellence SUPPRA
  • Qualified applicants are invited to send their application documents (CV, certificates and any other relevant papers) by not later than 28.02.2023 to:
