Aalto University is where science and art meet technology and business. We shape a sustainable future by making research breakthroughs in and across our disciplines, sparking the game changers of tomorrow and creating novel solutions to major global challenges. Our community is made up of 13 000 students, 400 professors and close to 4 500 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community's diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

The Soft Matter and Wetting research group at the Department of Applied Physics ( https:// physics.aalto.fi/smw) is looking for a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher in Underwater Superhydrophobicity, aiming at obtaining PhD degree. We expect the ideal candidate to be passionate about exploring new frontiers in this discipline and pushing beyond the current state-of-the-art.

The project deals with superhydrophobic surfaces that can trap air (plastron) within the surface roughness features when immersed in water. Understanding the plastron's stability and dynamics is extremely important for underwater applications such as drag reduction, prevention of corrosion and biofouling. Thus, the primary research activities for this position will involve materials design (microfabrication), surface modification, wetting characterization, use of imaging techniques (high-speed cameras and microscopy), fluid mechanics and dynamics.

Your experience and ambitions

Applicant must have Master's degree in physics, chemistry, materials science (or engineering) or a closely related field. Prior experience in a programming language (e.g. MATLAB, Python) is required. Profound knowledge in surface wetting or microfabrication is appreciated. Experience in developing and testing experimental setups would be beneficial.

A successful candidate should demonstrate capability and willingness to learn new methods, work independently and in a team, and have good written and oral communication skills in English. The selected candidate needs to apply for the study right in doctoral studies at Aalto University School of Science. Please check the student information and admission criteria at https: // www. aalto.fi/en/study-options/aalto-doctoral-programme-in-science-0. Specifically, pay attention to the required language proficiency (English language). Finnish language is not required. Additionally, the applicant is expected to have good interpersonal skills and to be self-motivated.

What we offer

Aalto University offers excellent learning and development opportunities, an inspiring and supportive working environment, and a diverse professional community. By joining our group, you would get the possibility to develop multidisciplinary research skills and be engaged in collaboration with other research groups in Aalto University.

Besides conducting high-quality scientific research, the candidate will also get an opportunity to develop supervising and teaching skills, e.g., by advising graduate and undergraduate students and acting as a teaching assistant for one of the department courses.

The position is immediately available. The contract will be made initially for two years and extended to another two years after a successful mid-term progress review. The total duration of doctoral studies is four years.

The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours. Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary for Doctoral researchers is approximately 2690 € per month (gross), and it increases as you progress in your research and studies. The contract includes Aalto University occupational healthcare.

Our vast array of professional development opportunities means you will grow and learn, having the chance to participate actively in staff trainings and development projects based on your interests and needs. There is great freedom in your role, and we have a flexible modern working culture. We value work- life balance and well-being in all aspects of life.

We work in a hybrid way, and the primary workplace is Otaniemi, Espoo. The Otaniemi campus is a thriving and connected community of 100 nationalities, 13,000 students and 4,500 employees. Life at the transformed campus is vibrant and filled with amazing architecture, calming nature, and a variety of cafes, restaurants, services and good connections along the recently opened metro line.
