The Doctoral Programme in Engineering Sciences within the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences has strong industrial relevance. Graduates have the ability to refine industrial challenges into scientific research questions and apply scientific methods to create new knowledge. They will have the expertise to pursue challenging careers in the field of engineering sciences. The programme is closely focused on technology covering the following research fields: Automation Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering as well as Mechanical and Production Engineering.

Job description

We have 4 fully funded doctoral researcher (postgraduate student) positions open to candidates willing to carry out a research project towards a doctoral degree (Dr. Sci. / PhD). Most of the positions are to be funded for four years, subject to progress review after two years. Shorter periods can also be considered. The doctoral researchers are supposed to carry out research in one of our research groups in the Unit of Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering or the Unit of Materials Science and Engineering. More information of the research fields and relevant research groups can be found here:

  • https: // www. engineering
  • https: // www.
  • Requirements

A necessary requirement is a M.Sc. degree in a relevant field (related to automation science and engineering, materials science and engineering, or mechanical and production engineering).

Another necessary requirement is a letter of intent (see below) signed by the applicant and his/her responsible supervisor. The supervisor must be on the list of responsible supervisors of the Doctoral Programme in Engineering Sciences of Tampere University. Thus, the candidate needs to find a committed supervisor from Tampere University before submitting the application. Please, search and contact potential supervisors by using the web links of the research groups above.

The candidates are selected based on their researcher potential and the fit of the plan to the strategy of the faculty. The researcher potential is demonstrated through the previous studies and merits in research work and thesis writing. In particular, the relevant indicators that we examine at the first stage are (1) quality & grade of the M.Sc. thesis, (2) GPA of M.Sc. and B.Sc. studies, (3) scientific publications (if applicable), (4) other academic merits listed in the CV, (5) letter of intent with a motivation statement and a tentative research plan, signed by applicant and responsible supervisor.

Please, see below for the necessary documents attached to the application. The selection procedure may be supplemented by an interview (remotely). Good oral and written communication skills and cooperation abilities are necessary factors in the selection procedure.

Please note that before commencing in the position, the selected candidates must also apply for a study right within the doctoral programme, unless they already have one. The selected candidates will be informed about this separate procedure later in 2023.
