We are now looking for two doctoral researchers to carry out research in HOMCRI-research project in relation to Gaza, West Bank, or Lebanon. Fixed- term positions are filled full time for 3+1 years (36 months, with an opportunity for 12 months extension), starting from 1 November (or upon agreement).

Job Description

Doctoral researchers will pursue a doctoral degree as part of the project Dwelling with Crisis: Home at Spaces of Chronic Violence , funded by a European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grant). The project studies incapacitating material, affective, and political conditions of home-making and everyday dwelling in spaces of economic collapse, infrastructural shortage, protracted state/settler violence and/or war-torn environments. It focuses on three regions – West Bank, Gaza, and Lebanon – to explore (i) ways of making home in spaces constantly exposed to affective disruptions, political incapacitations, and material negations, and to so develop (ii) novel methodological and conceptual ways for thinking the negative politics of materiality, affect and dwelling/home. The five-year project (2023-2028) is led by Dr Mikko Joronen and is implemented by a research team of altogether 4 postdoctoral researchers, 2 PhD-students, a senior research fellow, the PI, and a coordinator-researcher.

The doctoral researcher will be affiliate to a Space and Political Agency Research Group (SPARG) and Palestine Research Group (PRG) (Administrative Studies, Faculty of Management and Business), which offer great opportunities for young researchers to develop their careers in a highly international environment. The major subject of doctoral degree is Regional Studies.

The expected duration of studies (full-time) is four years. Fixed-term employment contracts are made for a maximum period of three years, with a possibility for a one-year extension; the eventual length of the contract depends on the doctoral researcher's current stage of studies and the expected graduation date. The terms of the dissertation work are defined in the doctoral researcher's personal study and supervision plan, including a detailed annual work schedule.

Doctoral students can choose their topic independently within the frame of the HOMCRI-project, but should indicate in their preliminary research plan, which of the three regions (or combination of regions) they plan to focus on. Doctoral students will partake the project material collection in/on Gaza/West Bank/Lebanon with other project team members working in the region. The project also offers a chance to get PhD training in close collaboration with members of the HOMCRI-project research team. In addition to the dissertation work, work time will be devoted to other project activities and teaching (no more than 5% of annual work time).

The position provides an excellent opportunity for conducting a full PhD by working in a motivated, international, and interdisciplinary research team on themes closely related to critical and political geographies of materiality, affect, politics and home in the Middle East.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates who have a completed higher university degree in geography or cognate fields (such as anthropology, political science, sociology or middle eastern studies). Knowledge on Middle East (Palestine/Lebanon in particular), qualitative methods (especially ethnographic/participatory methods, theme interviews and workshop organizing), and key themes of the project are seen as an advantage. We expect the candidate to demonstrate a strong level of motivation and commitment to HOMCRI-project, and a good level of English in writing and communication.

When evaluating candidates, we will consider the following criteria:

  • Alignment of your plans and ideas with aims and key themes of the project
  • Quality and novelty of your preliminary plans
  • Merits and suitability of the applicant
  • Motivation letter
  • We also expect the candidate to be willing to travel to named research site(s). Arabic language skills are seen as an advantage, but not as a requirement.

The salary for a doctoral researcher will be based on the job demands and the employee's personal performance as presented in university salary system. According to the criteria (for teaching and research staff), the position of a doctoral researcher is placed at levels 2−4, in addition to which employees receive performance-based salary. In the beginning of the PhD process the monthly salary often lands around 2600€. A trial period (6 months) applies to all our new employees.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University and Tampere University as an employer.
