Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) is an internationally acknowledged research university with an extensive responsibility for providing education in Swedish in Finland. The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers 8 new, funded positions for doctoral students (max. 48 months/position) including one within the Finland Fellowship programme for non-EU/EEA doctoral students.

The positions are available within the following doctoral programmes:

Biosciences (main subjects: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Environmental and Marine Biology)

Chemical and Process Engineering (main subjects: Chemical Engineering (kemiteknik), Chemical Engineering (process- och energiteknik)

Information Technology (main subjects: Computer Engineering, Computer Science)

Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Geology (main subjects: Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Mineralogy)

Pharmaceutical Development and Medical Technology (main subjects: Drug Development, Pharmacy)

An employment as doctoral student may start September 1, 2023 or as per agreed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATION This announcement is open for those who have a master's degree AND a supervisor or a potential supervisor from Åbo Akademi University (who has agreed to supervise the applicant) within any of the main subjects represented at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Applicants must receive their Master's degree (or equivalent) on June 30th 2023 , at the latest (a copy of degree certificate or a certificate of completed degree achieved after the application period has closed should be sent to [email protected]).

Please note that there is a separate application process for the admission to a doctoral programme at ÅAU. Applicants can apply for admission to a doctoral programme after receiving the decision on employment. An applicant, who is not yet accepted as a doctoral student at the Faculty, needs to fulfil the requirements for doctoral studies according to the principles for admission to the doctoral programmes within the faculty. When the employment commences, the doctoral student needs to be accepted to the relevant doctoral programme.

In the recruitment, the applicants are assessed on the basis of their study achievements, research plan and its feasibility, and possible results of previous research in the relevant field or related subjects.

Previously received funding for doctoral studies will be considered when determining the final length of the employment (the received funding can amount to a total maximum of 48 months).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Doctoral students employed by Åbo Akademi University should actively take part in the research and education within the faculty, in Turku or in Vaasa.

Åbo Akademi University applies the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary for a doctoral position will be based on levels 2-4 of the job demand level for teaching and researching staff in the salary system. Currently, the starting salary for doctoral students is approximately 2,340€ per month. The salary increases to approximately 3,100€ per month as the candidate makes progress towards a doctoral degree and the finalization of the studies.

Doctoral students will have total working time, which means 1,612 hours per academic year. The employment is full-time. The individual study plan for doctoral students will be evaluated annually.

A trial period applies to new employees.

Copies of diplomas including transcript of records (BA, MA, MSc, other).

Doctoral students already registered at ÅAU: Account of all previous funding received for the doctoral studies (funding organization + time period + sum received), and other funding that has been applied for (in addition to this application).

The evaluation process begins after the application period has closed. The assessment also includes evaluation by external experts. A preliminary decision on employment will be made in early July. BEHÖRIGHETSKRAV OCH BEDÖMNING Denna utlysning är öppen för de som har en magisterexamen OCH en handledare eller tilltänkt handledare vid Åbo Akademi vid något av de huvudämnen som finns vid fakulteten för naturvetenskaper och teknik. Sökande måste ha avlagt sin magisterexamen (eller motsvarande) senast 30.6.2023 (en kopia på examensbetyg eller intyg över avlagd examen som erhålls efter ansökningstidens utgång skickas till [email protected]).

Notera att anhållan om studierätt till forskarutbildningen sker via ett separat ansökningsförfarande. Sökande kan ansöka om studierätt efter att ha fått besked om de avlönade befattningarna. Sökande som inte redan har studierätt för forskarutbildning vid fakulteten bör uppfylla kriterierna för antagning till forskarutbildning i enlighet med principerna för antagning till doktorandprogrammen vid fakulteten. Då anställningen inleds bör doktoranden vara antagen till doktorandprogrammet.

Vid anställning av doktorander utvärderas sökanden på basis av studieprestationer, forskningsplan och dess genomförbarhet samt eventuella forskningsresultat inom ämnesområdet eller närliggande ämne.

För doktorandstudierna erhållen tidigare finansiering påverkar den slutgiltiga längden på anställningen (finansieringen får uppgå till tot. max 48 mån.).

ANSTÄLLNINGSVILLKOR Anställda doktorander ska vara en aktiv del av fakultetens forskning och utbildning på campus i Åbo eller Vasa.

Åbo Akademi följer de finska universitetens lönesystem. Lönen för doktorander läggs enligt kravnivåerna 2-4 för undervisnings- och forskningspersonal. För närvarande är ingångslönen för en ny doktorand ca 2 340 €/månad. Lönen kommer att justeras vartefter avhandlingsarbetet framskrider så att den är ca 3 100 €/mån när doktoranden närmar sig doktorsexamen.

Anställda doktorander följer systemet med helhetsarbetstid om 1 612 timmar per år. Anställningen är på heltid. Doktoranders individuella studieplan uppföljs årligen.

Vid nyanställning tillämpas prövotid.

Redan antagna ÅA-doktorander: Redovisning över tidigare finansiering som erhållits för doktorandstudierna (finansiär + tidsperiod + summa) samt eventuell annan finansiering som har sökts för studierna (utöver denna ansökan).
